Tue Jan 24, 2006 12:29 am Question....... |
|
This mite be a stupid question but I am an emerging TNG fan, before I was all Voyager and totally oblivious to the rest of the world but after watching every Voyager episode at least five times each, one needs to move on...Ok now to the real question if anyone's still with me after my gabbering... .......Why did Gates McFadden (Doctor Crusher) leave the show for the second season and then come back.....did she just go on vacation lol....or what?!? In the show she was at star fleet medical or something like that but where was the actress?

As an actress she was pregnant. She found out she was pregnant in the first season and then she got the blue coat trying to cover it up in her uniform because she was afraid that if she were pregnant she would lose her job. So in the 2nd season she finished her pregnancy and gave birth. And ever since then, the blue coat just looked good and they kept it on her for the remainder of the series.

Wow, I didn't know that. I was always wondering about that too. It was really weird, they had her and then Dr. Kate Pulaski and it was kind of confusing. I liked Dr. Pulaski but I do say that I missed Crusher after a while. She was a good character.

Me either. I prefer Crusher over her anyday because Crusher in my opinion is the better doctor.

She struck me as being slightly arrogant. Yet her doctoring was inferior to Dr. Crusher.
Several times I found myself asking "Who does she think she is, talking to the captain that way?" and yet she always got away with it.

I liked Pulaski. I liked Crusher SO much better, but Pulaski was kind of okay...I guess...but Crusher was better, I do agree! So much kinder.

I preferred Pulaski. I thought Diana Muldaur was a better actress and I found her character to be the only "thorn in the side" of Picard he ever had on that crew. She provided a different view of the 24th century that I don't think we got from any other member of the TNG crew. McFadden was just BLAH to me. She never stood out on her own, and episodes where she was the main character flopped, namely Sub Rosa.

Yeah, Crusher I think definitely had the best bedside manner. I liked Crusher a lot better too, I'm just glad that she came back.

Gates McFadden did indeed become pregnant during TNG's run, but that was not the reason for her absence during the 2nd season. She gave birth to her son in the summer of 1991, between the 4th and 5th seasons. As for her departure and return, McFadden was apparently asked to leave the show at the end of the 1st season, but then brought back in the 3rd season due to fan and cast member support. The Gates McFadden article on memory-alpha.org addresses this issue as follows:
memory-alpha.org wrote: | McFadden left the series during the second season, replaced by Diana Muldaur as Doctor Katherine Pulaski. Officially, the producers felt that the character of Crusher had not developed as well as they had hoped. Unofficially, there were some disagreements between the show's producers and McFadden as to how the character should develop, which may have led to some bad blood between her and several executive producers, resulting in McFadden's being released from her contract before the second season.
(citation needed - edit)
But thanks to a letter-writing campaign, support from Patrick Stewart, and a personal invitation from Rick Berman, McFadden was brought back to the TNG cast for the third and subsequent seasons. |

I also think that the creators of the series sought of sensed the unrealistic lovey dovey kind iof attitude in the crew in the first season and they wanted a bit more angst and so they created a character very similar to Bones in that she was a good doctor who had a bit of an attitude of speaking up when they thought the captain was making the wrong decision and I think it worked really well especially in the episode where she prematurely ages and they have to transport her to remove the infected dna.
I thought that was a quality episode and the fact that she was giving the captain as good as she got and then she did get her just deserts was fantastic, good viewing.

I thought Pulaski was the best by far. I loved the way her and picard were together and altogether just a great character. From what we see of her id say she is a very skilled doctor too. Crusher was just ok. She wasnt good or bad, she simply...was.
Yeah crusher left at the end of season 1 because she was pregnant. She was also pregnant in season 4 but she didnt leave. When you watch the episode "The Host" you'll see that in the episode the camera shots were aligned so you dont see her stomach
