PostSat Jan 07, 2006 6:27 pm    Isaac Asimov-Should They Make Another Movie?

Okay, for those of you who are familiar with Isaac Asimov, known to most Sci-Fi fans as the "Father of Science Fiction," I am curious as to why there hasn't been a movie based on any of his books except for I, Robot and Bicentennial Man.

Now for anyone who isn't familiar with this man, he's one of the best sci-fi writers ever to have existed. Most of his works were published in the 1930s. He wrote hundreds of books, but his most critically-acclaimed work is the extraordinary Foundation Series, which includes Prelude to Foundation, Foundation, Second Foundation, Foundation and Empire, and so on.

Since his death, Asimov's Foundation Series has been continued by other notable sci-fi writers, but I wish they would either make a mini-series based on the books or a movie.

My favorite book is Nightfall, however, and I would like for someone to direct a movie based on it. It's such a unique story and I think people would really go for it if it were made with today's technology and awesome directors.

What do you think? Should they make another Asimov book into a movie, and if so....which book or series should they base it on?

We all really enjoyed I, Robot...but did you know there's more to the story? Robot Dreams and Robot and Empire, and more! Maybe they could continue with that?

That would be cool, but I've only read I, Robot (before the movie, though).

Bicentennial Man was based off of Isaac Asimov's work, and there's actually I think two versions of Nightfall which have been made, but I think they got bad reviews.

Yeah, I know about Bicentennial Man......

I didn't hear about those versions, will have to look them up..were they 80s movies? Or more recent?

Oh, I totally missed you saying Bicentennial Man in your post...

I think at least one version of Nightfall is recent, I'm not sure about the other. I'd suggest www.imdb.com

Lol oh you must have missed it....it's there! Maybe you accidentally "overlooked" it?

Thanks!

Ack. No wonder why it got such bad reviews................who the hell is the Director? She needed NAME actors........and.....sheesh looks like she beat to crap one of the BEST books/short stories I've ever read....

Well if they make a movie, I'd like them to stop drastically altering his books.

Seriously, I, Robot was "suggested by" Asimov's work. That is low.

I think it would be a seriously difficult undertaking to do the Foundation series, in scope. But maybe a Foundation miniseries would work--it worked for Dune, and it's science fiction, so the Sci-Fi Channel might go for it. I'd watch it.

"I, Robot" had Asimov turning in his grave!

I don't think they should make any more Asimov books into films. I wouldn't be able to stand the constant moaning from my father. Honestly, we have a whole shelf devoted to Asimov...

still. After the Butchering of I, Robot and Bicentennial Man, I dont think any more Assimov books should be touched until some director wants to do one the Right way.

Agreed. Absolutely agreed on that point.

I mean, we all love Robin Williams, but Bicentennial Man could've been done so much better.....so could I, Robot....

I wish they'd do a Foundation series, maybe a TV series and/or a movie?

I don't know. I don't think it would get high ratings because it might require the viewer to have a small degree of intelligent thought.
