Quote:
LONDON, England (Reuters) -- British police hunting a gang of armed robbers who shot dead one female police officer -- a mother of 3 -- and seriously injured another have released descriptions of the three men they said were involved in the shooting.

Police said they had arrested one man and one woman in London in connection with the case but gave no further details.

The two officers were shot after being called to a travel agency in the center of the northern city of Bradford on Friday afternoon when an alarm was triggered.

One officer, Sharon Beshendsky, 38, a mother of three children and two step children, was shot dead and another, Teresa Milburn, 37, was shot in the shoulder.

Milburn is under armed guard in hospital.

Police told a news conference they were looking for three men, one Asian and two black, who were seen leaving the travel agents.

"More than one of these men was armed with a fire arm and one of them had a knife," Detective Superintendent Andy Brennan said.

The three men were described as being between 20 and 30 years of age.

A police spokeswoman said extra officers had been drafted in to work on the case and Chief Constable Colin Cramphorn said they had their "A team" working on the case.

Eighty-nine police officers have been killed on duty in Britain in the last 30 years.

Prime Minister Tony Blair and Home Secretary Charles Clarke expressed shock and sadness at the latest death while the story was carried on the front page of most of the British newspapers.

The last woman police officer to die on duty was 29-year-old Alison Armitage, who was run over by a stolen car during an undercover operation near Oldham in 2001.

The 1984 death of 25-year-old policewoman Yvonne Fletcher after shots were fired from the Libyan embassy in London led to Britain severing diplomatic relations with Libya for 15 years.
