I'm not surprised. Trek has drawn several referances from the US Navy/Air Force. Mostly terminology, I think.

A heap of the terminology used in star trek came from NASA and the air force!

Actually...no. the Ranking in Star Trek is not the same as the Air Force...It's the same as the Navy...Being a Navy enlisted person...soon applying for an Officer program...I know what it is...
I didn't even realize that Trek used the same ranking as the Navy until I joined the Navy...I was amazed and so happy!!! LOL.

You probably actually mean Navy...Starfleet is the Navy of space in the future, basically...But yes, they do look like the Naval Officer Dress Uniforms...

It's no mistake. Starfleet uniforms and ranks, and termonology, are taken from the US armed forces. Cardassian ranks, Klingon ranks, Romulan ranks, Bajoran Ranks, they also take their rank systems based on countrys ranking system. This is all done purposly, mostly with starfleet, to show the Human connection to the past

Yep...that's what makes Starfleet the "Navy" of space...LOL. But it's true, though.

"Cardassian ranks...take their rank systems based on countrys ranking system"? Huh? In which country are "Gul" or "Glinn" ranks? Now, I realize that "Legate" is based on a position in ancient Roman society, but I'm pretty sure the other Cardassian ranks mentioned on screen are merely names that the producers cooked up.

You never noticed its Naval rankings?
the Enterprise is a ship you know, not a plane. Even, the Enterprise_E(i think) was the flagship of the fleet.
Maybe the ranks of Lieutenant and Commander might not give it away, but Admiral and Fleet admiral would, wouldn't they?
All the terms they use on board are naval too, "Captain on the bridge", "Hullbreach", "Deck 7", "I'll be in my quarters", "Dock at the nearest spaceport"

Interesting...I never did notice. It is always interesting to see how life influences or mirrors the dramatic arts.
