Fri Sep 16, 2005 7:48 pm Constitution Day |
|
Today is the day known as Constitution Day, which was passed into law by the US Congress that says that all elementary, middle, and high school students must be given SOMETHING about the constitution, either this week or next week (if you're in a US elementary, middle, or high school grade and you're not doing anything dealing with the Constitution at this time, talk to the school. It's the LAW).
So, being that today is Consitution Day, and tomorrow is the anniversary of the signing of the US Constitution, I wanted to start a topic to talk about it and whatnot.

Well, we are a democracy, that's true, just not a full-fledged direct democracy--we have a representative democracy, also known as a Republic.

yea this is similar to what i read in the paper:
Quote: |
Many Americans (not all) seem to think that the USA is a Democracy. It isn't; it is a Republic.
A republic is the rule of the people by an elected body of officials (and an elected head of state). Once they have been elected you, the people, have no real control over them. They can do whatever they want so long as they don't break the law. They don't have to keep campaign promises (although it helps if they want to get reelected)
A democracy is the rule of the people by the people. That means anyone can vote on anything (or, indeed, Everything). All votes are open to the public; if you disagree with foreign policy then you can vote to change it, etc.

This is one of the major flaws in our present government. The founders lived in an agrarian society where the representatives spent at least several months of the year in close proximity to their constituents, who had face-to-face access with them, and the ability to throw rocks at their house (or whatever) when angry. The intention was that voters would know their reps as individuals, not as faces on the TV mouthing a few soundbites.
