PostThu Jun 30, 2005 3:07 pm    60th Anniversary of the end of World War II

As you should all know, World War II ended 60 years ago in 1945 (8th May in Europe, 15th August when Japan surrendered). I would like to know how, if you are, you or your community is celebrating this special event.

My village, High Spen, is having a big celebration on 10th July (there was a reason for this date that I cannot think of right now).

The whole day will be devoted to it, starting in St Patricks church with a service of rememberance and thanks, going on to an exhibition and video showing at the local primary school, with a memorial in one of the local pubs, a party in the park with brass band and fancy dress, and ending the day in the other pub with a karaoke. Nice full day- just hoping it doesn't rain!

My friend planned out a World War II block. Its like 10 days long, because she's reading ALL her world war II books out loud and showing all her movies and stuff.....

I'm a WWII history buff, but I don't know how to celebrate it. The best I can do is watch the Military Channel all day My favorite channel. I dunno if playing WWII games can be considered celebrating, lol

I prefer to be low-key and remember it in private, to reflect on things and to think about the freedoms I have, only available to me because brave men and women took the fight to evil.

I wish some of my relatives were war veterans. I would LOVE to hear some war stories.

Well, I live in Holland so we already had that big celebration. On May 4th we always remember the dead and the fallen (is that how you say it?) and on May 5th it's (if you would translate it litterally) Liberation day. So a lot of party-ing and stuff
