				| I'll give it a miss for now, I'll no doubt rent it when it comes out.
I do enjoy the original novel. It's a magical tale you can immerse yourself in - Roald Dahl really was a great author, and there's a great theme in the book which was lost on me as a kid but which I understood years later.

The 1971 film was very good. It was different to the book, maybe a little darker, but very good. Gene Wilder was great as Willy Wonka and, like the book, there's a great message in the film. And, like the book, you could immerse yourself in the fantasy. I must say that it's quite a scary film, though, what with those horrible Ooompa Loompas and a girl turning blow and blowing up like a balloon.

First impressions aren't everything but the new film just looked weird. Tim Burton is one of my favourite directors, having directed great movies like Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Batman and Batman Returns, but I just don't fancy the movie. Willy Wonka seemed more like the class clown in the trailer I saw. Hope my first impression was wrong.

By the way, anyone ever read the novel Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, a follow up to the Chocolate Factory novel? It was very good too, although there's never been a film of it. I think there was one planned years ago, but I'm pretty sure legal issues (yawn) prevented it from being made.

Right, that's probably more than anyone ever wanted to know about Willy Wonka's world.

				| Well, I am going to go see it.
Johnny Depp is a great actor and I love the way he chooses his roles. You can never predict his next one.

Yes, this movie does look very strange ... But I support him!

I'll let you all know what my thoughts are on it after I see it.

Yes, well, the new one looks like Marilyn Manson, a dowsight LESS scary than the original ginger ninja.
I read both charlie books. The second one is good... eek! Vermacious Knids!

				| Now, Edward Scissorhands is a great film, perhaps the best one that Burton ever directed, and possibly Depp's greatest role.
The new one does look disturbing but the old one was too. I mean, those Oompa Loompas could give a person nightmares. I hope their "look" has been changed a little.

				| I'd have to agree with that. I watched it twice to see if my opinion would change on the second viewing. The premise is a good one but the whole thing was far too surreal for me.

				| I still haven't decided if I was going to see the movie or not.
While I do have fond memories of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with Gene Wilder, Who was creepy in that movie to the point where the boat scene got placed in a 100 scariest movie's thing at a low number, I'm wondering if Johnny Depp can pull of the horror that truely is Willy Wonka.

In different parts in perviews it seems he could it off seeing as how it looks like he is coming for your soul, and he knows it'll taste good. Other parts he just looks like a little kid jumping around and such. That's Not Willy Wonka.

				| ^Right you are. I think most people want a bit of consistency with the character, as you got with the original novel and in the 1971 movie. Will Johnny Depp pull it off? Time will tell.
By the way, when I saw the original movie a LONG time ago, I was put off chewing gum. Remember the scene where Violet chews the experimental gum, turns blue and blows up? How disturbing that was.

The boat scene in the original was very disturbing too but in a good way.

Reading this thread has brought back a lot of memories of the original for me. I loved the songs in it.

				| I'll go. The first one was actually designed for adults, not for kids; so in comparison, the new one isn't really all that strange. But yeah, it looks weird.

				| OTT? What's that?? I thought he was great in the trailer, with those perfect teeth and stuff... Just great. Depp just belongs in Tim Burton's movie, just like in Edward Scissorhands

				| This movie will certainly appeal to the younger kids. 4-8 years olds.
If your like 16+ years old then this movie is wierd, annoying, stupid and down right a waste of money in your mind.

 I speak the truth.
