PostWed Jun 08, 2005 3:10 pm    Dean defends remarks about the GOP

Quote:
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean on Wednesday defended his recent harsh criticism of Republicans, including his observation that they are "pretty much a white, Christian party."

Dean noted that he, too, is a white Christian. But he said the GOP is too narrow in its scope and the Democratic Party is far more diverse.

While even prominent Democrats in recent days have distanced themselves from some of his comments, the outspoken Dean, appearing on NBC"s "Today" show, said criticism of him is meant by Republicans to divert attention from the country's problems and make him the issue instead.

Dean told a forum of journalists and minority leaders Monday that Republicans are "not very friendly to different kinds of people, they are a pretty monolithic party ... it's pretty much a white, Christian party."

Challenged on that during the NBC interview, Dean said "unfortunately, by and large it is. And they have the agenda of the conservative Christians."

"This is a diversion from the issues that really matter: Social Security, and adequate job opportunity, strong public schools, a strong defense," Dean said.

Asked about it on the "Fox & Friends" show, GOP Party Chairman Ken Mehlman joked that "a lot of folks who attended my Bar Mitzvah would be surprised" he heads a Christian party.

"We gotta get ourselves beyond this point where when we disagree about politics, we call the other guy names," he said.

The former Vermont governor also recently raised eyebrows when he told a group of progressives that Republicans "never made an honest living in their lives," a comment he was forced to explain a day later. The one-time presidential candidate also said that House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, who has not been accused of any crime, ought to go back to Houston where he can serve his jail sentence.

Democratic New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson said Tuesday that Dean is doing a good job, but is not the party's spokesman.

Last weekend, Sen. Joe Biden, D-Delaware, and 2004 vice presidential candidate John Edwards criticized Dean for his recent remarks, saying he doesn't speak for them.

Biden, asked about Dean Wednesday during an interview on the Don Imus radio show, also said the chairman is doing a good job.

"A lot of things he does say, I agree with," Biden said. But he also said that Dean "has views that are slightly different than mine .. .But look, he's a lightning rod. ... It's probably good that there's a guy out there that's a lightning rod ... ."

Biden, however, added that he thinks "the rhetoric is counterproductive."

"I think this country has a purple heart, not a red heart or a blue heart," Biden said. "If we can't bring this (country) together, man, boy, we're really in deep trouble."

I'm sorry, but I find this insulting. Sure, the majority may be Christian caucasions, but I don't see what that has to do with anything. Just because the majority of a party exhibits certain traits doesn't mean anything. I'm white, but am I Christian? No. Whats the difference if a party appeals to certain group of people? Clearly most of the population would concur,

Politics shouldn't be about skin colour or religeon. It should be about people looking at life and problems differently and then the people vote for who they want to see solve the problem.

He's an idiot, but I love him! I'm one of his biggest supporters! He's doing a GREAT job, bringing the Democrats down! Too bad some are starting (for political reasons, mostly) to distance themselves from his remarks, such as Sharpton, Edwards, Biden, and Richardson.

But let's run down the list of the greatest idiot to ever hit the Democratic party in a long time's statements:

"I hate Republicans and everything they stand for."
"Republicans are braindead."
"[The battle of Republicans and Democrats] is a battle of good versus evil. And we're the good." ((Basically, Republicans are evil.))
Republicans are dark.
Republicans are liars.
"A lot of Republicans have never worked an honest living in their lives."
Republicans are dishonest.
George W. Bush is the most ineffective president that this country has seen in my lifetime.
George W. Bush had knowledge of 911 before it happened.
"Republicans disgust me."
"The Republican National Committee couldn't get this many blacks in a room unless they brought in an entire hotel staff." ((And yet, WHERE are the high-up minority democrats? Well, there ARE none, yet we have Rice, Clarence Thomas, and many others. This is what Sharpton had a pickle with.))
Republicans are corrupt.

And now THIS! This man is unhinged! Great choice for the Dems! I think he's doing a great job!
He's a jerk, though. A real jerk who's only bringing his party down. Perhaps this is a well-planned strategy to make Hillary seem more to the center? Just a theory, but I don't know...

Oh, and on that "A lot of Republicans have never worked an honest living in their lives" statement, he said at a recent press conference that he was talking about the Republican leadership. Oh, so now the man who calls Republicans liars is a liar himself?

Either way, way to reach out, Mr. Dean!

Not quite
And keep in mind that 80% of American counties voted for Bush.

In the long run, Dean is a huge mistake for the Democrats. There is no way he can get out of what he said.

You said "the democrats are still way ahead in the congress polls." That's not true. Sure, they're ahead--although it doesn't mean much, considering that since it's not an extremely large margin of difference (no more than 7%) and the polls are left-wing biased. If it was a significant difference, THEN it would mean something. And besides, I know for a fact that Senator Robert KKK Bird is going to have a hard election this year

There is bias in everything, and polls are worthless, IMO.

Well, if the Republicans are leading, then it shows something. But even if it WEREN'T biased, it's still not really worth counting as a great lead. It's polls, and unless there's a significant margine of difference, they mean little, Republicans or Democrats leading.

Nah, they are generally worthless most of the time.

No, it shows LITTLE of what America thinks. I sincerely don't give a damn whether it's a Republican or a Democrat in the lead when the points are so varried and there is little difference between them.

Didn't I say that to you in September/Octoberber when you were spouting off about how trustworthy polls such as Gallup were?

And in Dean's defense, Republicans might sit there and think he's helping them, but guess what? Most people BELIEVE IN what he says because he talks about things that no other Democrat will say, but what everyone is thinking.

And must I remind people about Ann Coulter and her famous lines.

"Historically, the best way to convert liberals is to have them move out of their parents' home, get a job, and start paying taxes." -Ann Coulter

Is she the leader of the Republican Party? I DON'T THINK SO! She's a prominent conservative, but NOT a prominent Republican Party personnel. Plus, I denounce that statement.
And I was clouded by bias back then. I know that Gallup is liberal now.
And he's saying things that no other democrat will say, but what everyone is thinking, and most people BELIEVE in what he's saying? Forgive me, Link, but that's the BIGGEST load of crap I've heard in a LONG time.
You think everyone thinks this, and believe in this:

"I hate Republicans and everything they stand for."
"Republicans are braindead."
"[The battle of Republicans and Democrats] is a battle of good versus evil. And we're the good." ((Basically, Republicans are evil.))
Republicans are dark.

Republicans are corrupt.
And also this White Christian thing? Link, you are SERIOUSLY misguided if you think that this is what most Americans think and believe.

funny that you've only brought in Half of what he's said, and it's the negative half at that. Biased a bit?

When Dean speaks, people Listen. He is a bit strong in his wording, but he gets his point across very effectively.

And you can denounce the statement all you want, doesn't change the fact that she still said it.

Half of what he's said? NO. Not half. ALL. Do you AGREE with him saying

"Republicans are braindead."

And you can say that people listen to him all that you want--but it's JUST NOT TRUE. You Liberals (oh, I'm generalizing (something that I haven't done in a long while here)), that is you such far-left liberals, are SO misguided and know NOTHING about middle America and most of America, for that matter. They do NOT like these attacks, and this is NOT reaching out.
You can say that I'm not telling the whole story all you want, but it's JUST NOT TRUE. You are so liberal and so misguided that you simply cannot see the truth on this matter! Howard Dean is a JERK, and his statements are NOT what most of America likes, otherwise John Edwards, Joe Biden, Al Sharpton, and Governor Richardson of New Mexico wouldn't be distancing themselves from his comments. I just don't get you in this circumstance.

(Sorry if I sound on-edge. I'm mad right now, this is angering me, so please forgive me for that )

Inform me what you mean by "middle america", if you mean places in middle america such as Kansas, Missouri and such, I know plenty of people out there by my grandparents who believe he speaks the truth. If you mean Middle CLASS america, I know plenty of middle class New York and New Jersey people that would agree with most of what Dean has said.

Nice attack, far from subtle though

Then could that not be on BOTH sides of the aisle? I could admit that SOME may be, but same with SOME Democrats. But to generalize like that is WRONG.

Nope. And if anything, it would be more with the Democrats. ::cough:: Clinton ::cough::
"A lot of Republicans have never worked an honest living in their lives."
Republicans are dishonest. True
Not true. And if you add in what he said immediately before that, it gives the feeling that he means MOST.
George W. Bush is the most ineffective president that this country has seen in my lifetime. Two wars, not having a thing to do with each other, the slaughterer of Thousands of innocent americans still not found, More military problems everyday, global warming increasing
Now that's just pure spinning...

NO, they didn't! Well, hardly, anyway. He knew that they were planning to attack, but that's IT.
"Republicans disgust me." Yes they do. Religion before people
Uh, no...

How so? And to generalize by saying that all REPUBLICANS are corrupt, including the average Republican, is WRONG.

And you can say that people listen to him all that you want--but it's JUST NOT TRUE.

Burden of proof lies on you, not me

It's just common sense. Do you really think that most Americans think like Dean? NO, they don't, and I've heard MANY testimonials from average Americans (including my parents) that they dislike it. And mind you, my parents are NOT conservative republicans, especially my mother.

You Liberals (oh, I'm generalizing (something that I haven't done in a long while here)), that is you such far-left liberals, are SO misguided and know NOTHING about middle America and most of America, for that matter. They do NOT like these attacks, and this is NOT reaching out.

Middle in terms of the more independent-minded American, the more centrist people. (Oh, and btw, I'm from NY and lived in NJ)

You can say that I'm not telling the whole story all you want, but it's JUST NOT TRUE. You are so liberal and so misguided that you simply cannot see the truth on this matter!
Nice attack, far from subtle though
Not an attack. I see it as the truth. But of course, this one IS a matter of perspective.

Howard Dean is a JERK, and his statements are NOT what most of America likes, otherwise John Edwards, Joe Biden, Al Sharpton, and Governor Richardson of New Mexico wouldn't be distancing themselves from his comments. I just don't get you in this circumstance.

And yet, they say they agree with much of what he says, he just has to change how he says it.

Not what I've heard about then saying that they agree with much of what he says (even though they do) Watched some of the interviews, etc. Didn't see that.

(Sorry if I sound on-edge. I'm mad right now, this is angering me, so please forgive me for that )

I just don't get how you can rationalize what Dean is saying, and not only that, but say he's in the MAINSTREAM, which you REALLY do have to be SO liberal to believe that. I'm really trying to understand how you arrive at your conclusions. I really am.

I have a lot of respect for Howard Dean. I think that he puts aside the political "love eachother" facade, and says what he thinks. He's well mobilized the base of the DNC. Face it, the United States thrives on partison friction, action and progress are made in the heat of angry arguments and debates, Dean provides that for his side. I really do respect the guy, and I think he's an effective politician.

The Republicans could use someone like him, since the key to winning these days is the mobilization of the base. It only takes 25% of America's population to elect someone (since over 50% don't vote.)

No, we DON'T need someone rampaging around saying horrible things about the other party like that. I would be ashamed if we did. I have NO RESPECT for him, at all. He's not very effective, except at getting the FAR LEFT energized.
And btw, Joseph Biden said that he doesn't like Howard Dean's comments and that he thinks that most Democrats don't like them, either. Not a direct quote, but exactly what he said So, Link, not what you said. Contradiction, the truth is.

With these recent comments he's once again trying to DIVIDE along racial, economic, religious, and many other lines. These comments are RACIST AND incorrect. You know, it's interesting how Mr. Dean can complain about Republicans not being accepting when, in fact, we ARE, and even MORE than the Democrats. He's even admitted that they've only gone after blacks just before elections, and Al Sharpton has stated his opposition to Dean's statements, etc. Look at the Republicans: a former education secretary, a former Secretary of State, and a present Secretary of State. Now how can you tell me that THAT'S not accepting? Plus, Attorney General Gonzalez is hispanic, and we have him. And not only that, but I think Chairman Dean needs to do a little more research on other things, to, such as, um, religious acceptance. I don't think he knows that the chairman for the other party, Ken Melman (chairman of the DNC) is, um, I don't know, um, JEWISH. Either he needs to do more research, or he's just trying to attack the Republicans (including the AVERAGE Republican, who dislikes this stuff, like many friends and parents that I know) at any chance he can get with all these horrible statements that ANY Democrat should be ASHAMED to hear him say!
