Quote:
The attack was reminiscent of "Jaws." Except this was real and not make-believe. A 22-year-old spear fisherman was swallowed almost whole by a great white shark on Sunday offshore from Cape Town, South Africa, reports The Scotsman. Dead is Henri Murray, a medical student at the University of Stellenbosch. He was eaten alive as his friend and fellow fisherman, Piet van Niekerk, watched on in horror.

Murray's body has not been found despite a massive search using a helicopter and police boats to locate the shark. Dave Estment, who was sitting on a jetty near the site of the attack, saw the great white shark come above the water's surface. "It was incredibly fast. The two spear fishermen were not far from the beach. Suddenly a huge shark surged from under the water taking the one diver [from his legs upwards] to his arms in its jaws," he told The Scotsman. "It must have been massive to have done that. Then the shark and the man just vanished."

Other witnesses said they estimate the shark was 20 feet long. Dr. Grant Munro told News24.com, "It was a massive thing, as big as a car." He said the shark tossed Murray's body into the air before swallowing it. "There was blood everywhere," he recalled. National Sea Rescue Institute divers did find a damaged weightbelt, scuba diving mask, a speargun, a rubber flipper, and a buoy with speared fish that had been attached to a trailing line. Great white sharks have been a protected species in South African waters since 1990, but protests have been growing to allow hunting following the deaths of several South African swimmers and surfers this year, notes the Scotsman. Henri Murray is survived by his parents and four brothers. A memorial service will be held on Thursday.

He shouldn't have been out there. Everyone knows about the Great Whites around Cape. They're huge, they kill lots of people and thousands of seals around the coast and he shouldn't have been out in the water. People go cage diving off the coast for a reason: nowhere else in the world you are guaranteed to see a great white.

I do feel sorry for his family (and for him as it probably took a while for him to die), but he shouldn't have been out there.

Moral of the story: don't spear fish in shark infested waters.
