Doctors in Peru say they have successfully separated the legs of a baby girl dubbed "little mermaid" because she was born with legs fused from her thighs to her ankles.

Following the 4-hour surgery, Dr. Luis Rubio held up 13-month-old Milagros Cerron's legs in a V-shape to show the line of stitches extending from her heels to her inner thighs.

"This surgical intervention has been a true success," he said.

But she still could need 15 years of corrective surgeries, Rubio said. Doctors need to reconstruct and repair some of her internal organs.

Milagros was born with a rare congenital defect known as sirenomelia, or "mermaid syndrome." It occurs in one out of every 70,000 births.

Rubio said there are only three known cases of children with the defect alive in the world today,

The surgery, performed by 11 doctors, including plastic surgeons, pediatricians and heart specialists, was televised live and watched by the child's parents.

Poor child... Maybe it would have been better to leave her with the fused legs and concentrate on the internal organs?
