The absolute best book in the world is The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. By Douglas Adams. Read the entire series, the books get increasingly worse but all of them are fun. If I were stuck on the island, the Guide is my one book I would choose.
Second best book is Frank Herbert's Dune. The entire series is impressive, read them all and enjoy them fully.
The third best book is Sophie's World. It takes you on a philosophy course throughout Western history and is an awesome eye-opener. The plot twist in the middle of the book is surprising yet captivating.
I also just finished The Five People You Meet in Heaven[/url], by Mitch Albom, which made me want to cry. It is original and touching.
Hmm . . . John Irving (especially [i]The World According to Garp and The Fourth Hand), Michael Douglas (Wonder Boys), David Eddings (The Belgariad), Kevin J. Anderson (Saga of Seven Suns), Isaac Asimov (Foundation Series), Arthur C. Clarke, Orson Scott Card, J.R.R. Tolkien . . .
There are just too many.

I like Tithe by Holly Black. The faeries in it aren't twee little flickering things... they're kickass murdering beasts, and the teenagers aren't exactly tame either. And there's lots of swearing in it. It's all to do with sacrifices and faery courts
Read Isaac Asimov's Foundation series. My mum told me they were fanastic.
I've just read Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden. It's quite a sad book, because this girl's mentor is forced to have abortions and her sister is dragged into becoming a prostitute, but it's a really good book, because it ends in a way you never thought it would.
I also enjoy reading traditional folk and fairy tales, especially celtic and Irish ones

Agree with you there. I have a different favourite book, but that is the best. Just finished rereading Mostly Harmless... I love Random

Halo First Strike
It is the story of How the Master Chief got from Halo back to earth and how did Sgt Johnson survived....It is the book between Halo and Halo 2

I'm not sure about the author, but there's an amazing series of books. The first one is called Sabriel. Its a fantasy type book, its very good.
