How Disturbing is this?

A Salem police officer holds a bag of meth seized.
SALEM -- Up to a dozen female students at Waldo Middle School may have been involved in engaging in sex acts with adult men in exchange for the drug methamphetamine, Salem police told KGW on Tuesday.
An investigation into allegations of girls trading sex for drugs was launched several months ago after police received a tip from a child at the school, said officer Laura Seefeldt.
Detectives were in the process of identifying the girls, some as young as age 12, and the men involved. Authorities plan to charge the adult participants with rape.
"If this is what you are doing with our young women, you are going to prison," said Seefeldt.
While Seefeldt described problem of meth as "an everyday thing here in this city," even police were suprised at how the meth scourge has now reached middle school-aged children.
Waldo Middle School in Salem.
"Too young," Seefeldt said, but parent Jeanne Zachary put it even more bluntly: "Shocking."
Police said it is possible their probe could lead beyond Waldo Middle School and may involve other area schools where similar incidents occured.
The Oregon Dept. of Human Services said more than 1,700 children were treated for methamphetamine problems in 2003, which is the latest year for available data. In the past five years, the state agency said the number of girls treated for meth in Oregon has skyrocketed by 57-percent. |
This is proof how bad the Meth Epidimic (SP) is it makes me wonder if this is happing at the schools where I live. This is proof that we need to get this garbage off our streets.

That's awful!! Don't those girls know they're ruining their bodies (both with the sex and drugs)? I bet they've got loads of manky infections too. Don't their parents give a damm about them?

Parents really need to keep a close eye on their kids these days.

I know. But they don't, which is the problem.
This kind of stuff is happening continuously, and it's horrible, disturbing, and disgusting.

It's poor parenting that leads to this happening.
But watch, as time goes on they'll try to shift the blame to something else. It's the same thing in every case, the parents dont want to admit guilt.

LOl I totally agree. Parents don't watch after their kids. Responsible parents do.

Yeah they'll probably blame it on "video games" and then they'll get banned and I'll become a graffiti artist and then they'll blame "TV" for the graffiti and ban that... oh the list of idiocy goes on and on.
Surely they would notice something different about their daughters if they were doing meth? Wouldn't they ask where they were going when they went out to sleep with these men?

I don't think "poor parenting" is really the answer. Most kids rebell against thier parents when they are not allowed any freedoms. Some kids probably do not have the best parental supervision.. But I'm sure that isn't the case for all of these students.

It never seems to be the parents faults. I'll admit some parents are doing the best they can, but they can't control their kids. American kids are so spoiled because parents won't beat them. I'm not saying like beat them near death, but a spanking here and there is not bad. I'm so sick of people blaming the tv and games. I watch tv, play games, and go on the internet. Yet I do no drugs or kill people. If kids are that stupid that they believe what they see on tv or games is real, then maybe someone has not been teaching them properly. Parents.

Yeah, this fifteen year old boy killed someone and they banned the video game Manhunt, which was an 18 rated game. How had he got hold of an 18 rated game? His mum had bought it for him. Oh the irony.
My brother plays GTA all the time but he's not stupid enough to copy what he sees. My parents spanked me as a kid and i have grown up into a "mature intelligent young lady" (my english teacher's words).
If parents cannot tell when their 12 year old is swapping sex for drugs, then they are not paying all that much attention to that child's life.

Apart from the fact I disagree mostly with beating a child (a parents perogative) I do agree to some extent it's the parents fault. Not completely, as there are often other elements involeved, but they're often contributing factors.
The reason I disagree with beating a child is that it can make that child violent. I've seen it happened too much. I was bullied by children who were smacked at home. It just doesn't work. The most I'll ever do to Sammie is a tap on the hand if she's doing something dangerous.

Well, you are quite right there. I would blaim a few things:
1. Society--it's expanding acceptance of bad, innapropriate behavior.
2. Rap music
3. Parents
And you are right on the spanking. When I was younger, I was spanked for misbehaving. That kept me doing the right thing.

Like who said spanking is beating? Spanking and beating are two different things.

Oh, of course. But where is the line drawn? It's very easy for a spanking to become a beating. Many children are killed or seriously injured by their parents "spanking" them.

Some parents yeah get out of control. But can't use anger when discipline a kid but can't get it through some though. I use time out first option then that don't work, talking and explaining that is wrong . when that don't work last resort is spanking.

I don't agree with beating them to the point of them bleeding or bruising. But sometimes kids do need to be slapped for doing something wrong. Not over and over though. Enough to get the point across that it is wrong. They may get violent as a result of the spanking? I gurantee you it isn't that. They are violent for other reasons. Some parents do take it too far. Thats why I think some parents are complete morons. Its really not that hard to gauge.

I agree with that. You have to teach children a lesson, that what they do comes with consequences. Have I ever liked being punished? No. Is being punished sometimes done unjustly? Yes. But is it NECESSARY? Yes.

I don't think kids should get hit. You should bring them up right to where they respect you when they are younger... and all it takes is "a look". My dad never hit me, all it took was a look to know I was getting out of line. Although.... he did thump my head a lot when he was mad at me...

Reason kids are so bad cause government says you can't spank and now kids are out of control and it is the truth. U may try talking but most of the time that don't work. It goes in one ear and out the other in Teens. They think they can get by with murder these days.
Sometimes you have to spare the rod than spoil the child. Ever heard the saying? Yeah i use time out first but last resort is spanking. U just let your kids get by with crap.

I classify spanking a just one slap with an open hand on the legs or back. Anything else can really hurt the child.
