ROME, Italy -- Pope Benedict XVI has said he is putting his predecessor John Paul II on the fast track to possible sainthood in the Roman Catholic Church.
The pope said Friday he had dispensed with rules that normally impose a five-year waiting period before beatification -- the last step before sainthood -- can even start.
Benedict's decision means that John Paul, who died on April 2, could be beatified and thus declared a "blessed of the Church" within a few years if a miracle can be attributed to him.
The main purpose of the rule is to allow emotions to calm down after a person dies and for evidence and witnesses supporting the sainthood cause to be prepared.
But John Paul himself set a precedent in 1999 when he granted a dispensation and let Mother Teresa's sainthood cause start only two years after her death.
Benedict made his announcement on the anniversary of a 1981 assassination attempt in St. Peters Square.
The news was met by applause by priests in the Basilica of St. John Lateran and Benedict joked that it was clear they had all understood Latin and did not repeat his announcement in Italian, Reuters said.
After the death of John Paul at the age of 84, there were calls from many for his sainthood. At his funeral Mass pilgrims held up banners saying "Santo Subito" ("Immediate Sainthood").

Hum... of all the people who should be made Saints, I think Mother Teresa should be first. She did so much good for so many people, while keeping herself out of politics in the most part.
I'm not saying it's a bad thing for John Paul II to be a saint, though.
(If she's already a saint, and I've missed it, feel free to correct me).

Following Teresa's death in 1997, the Holy See began the process of beatification, the second step towards possible canonization, or sainthood. This process requires the documentation of a miracle. In 2002, the Vatican recognized as a miracle the healing of a tumor in the abdomen of an Indian woman, Monica Besra, following the application of a locket containing Teresa's picture. Monica Besra said that a beam of light emanated from the picture, curing the cancerous tumor.
Besra's husband initially said that the tumor was cured by later hospital treatment. Besra's husband later withdrew his objections and attributed the healing to a miracle. A story in The Daily Telegraph quoted him as saying: "It was her miracle healing that cured my wife. Our situation was terrible and we didn't know what to do. Now my children are being educated with the help of the nuns and I have been able to buy a small piece of land. Everything has changed for the better."
The issue of the alleged miracle proved controversial in India around the time of Mother Teresa's beatification. Teresa was formally beatified by Pope John Paul II on October 19, 2003 with the title Blessed Teresa of Calcutta. A second accepted miracle is required for her to proceed to canonization. |

There are so many saints. In the early days of the church, lots were made, and they all have feast days. I wish I could take every saints feast day off like they used to 1000 years ago...
But it's good that the old pope will be made a saint, because it will revitalise the church and I think it would be cool to witness someone become a saint.
