What are the lifeboats mentioned in TNG and how do they work. I know that they are like escape pod but not that much more.

I think they are just the same thing as an escape pod. Due to the different writers throughout the various series, the names just got changed.
It could be that as the Galaxy-class ship was a "luxury liner" style starship, with families aboard, the escape pods are larger and better equipped than, say, the more utilitarian Defiant.

Hmm, the Enterprise-D's escape pods are equipped for carrying either 3 or 6 people (can't remember anymore, ), and they can connect to each other for better cnances of survival. That's all I remember from reading the TNG Tech Manual.
