We pay 17.5% VAT (Value Added Tax) here in the UK, and have done for a long time. I know it's not as difficult amount to work out (10% + 5% + 2.5%) but it is annoying

We don't pay VAT on children's clothes, or a few other items which I can't remember right now though

I buy Sammie's clothes at Asda (UK branch of Wal Mart). Still don't have to pay VAT, which might explain how they can sell jeans for �2 ($3.75)...

The only other thing I can remember that's VAT exempt is products to help disabled people which are only for their use. They can claim VAT back on that.

At the PX on the army base, we don't have to pay taxes but PX clothes are still outrageous. I am not paying 30 US Bucks for a shirt. No thanks I just go to Wal-Mart and have to pay Tax if I have to. PX only cheap on certain things like music and movies.

They should put prices on shirts down alot.

I've just checked up on the VAT exemption for the UK.

It includes:

Most clothing and footwear designed only for use of children under 14.
Most food, newspapers, books, etc.
Services such as doctors and dentists
Some types of protective equipment
(There are others on the list but it's really long and complicated

)

There are also some stuff sold at a reduced rate of VAT (5%)

They are:
Domestic fuel or power
Installation of energy saving materials
Grant funded installation of heating equipment or security goods or connection of gas supply
Renovation and alteration of dwellings
Women�s sanitary products
Children�s car seats

No matter where you buy these, if they meet the criteria they're VAT exempt (or reduced). There are so many exceptions though that unless you're selling these products it's hard to figure out what they are (for example, cakes are VAT exempt, but chocolate isn't).

I don't know what the rules are for Army bases here... I've never asked

I just checked on prices on the shirts again. The real fine dress clothes are 30 bucks lol... not the t shirts and pants. But depends on the brand of pants. Pants run between 16 dollars between 24 dollars at PX.

Just ain't gonna buy the dress clothes. I bought T-Shirts from the px. And shoes are cheap. I had to do a recheck on the clothes to make sure I was right. I was half right.

But I am not really worried about taxes anymore. I don't have a job , Charlie do all the working let him worry about it. I just use his money to buy food and clothes.
