Fri Mar 04, 2005 7:05 pm Report: Freed Journalist Injured by U.S. |
|
Quote: | ROME (AP) - A freed Italian hostage was injured and an Italian secret service agent killed Friday after a U.S. armored vehicle fired on a car in which they were riding in Iraq, two Italian news agencies reported.
The Apcom and ANSA news agencies said that Giuliana Sgrena, a reporter for the communist daily Il Manifesto, was in a hospital in Iraq with a shoulder injury. The shooting occurred at a roadblock while the car was heading to the airport, the reports said.
The editor of Il Manifesto, Gabriele Polo, said the secret service agent was killed when he threw himself over the freed hostage to protect her from fire, according to Apcom. He also said Sgrena was in the hospital but was not seriously injured.
The U.S. military press desk in Baghdad had no immediate comment on reports of the shooting and said it was looking into the matter.
Italy's Foreign Ministry said it had no immediate comment. Earlier, the Italian government had confirmed Sgrena's release and said a plane was waiting to bring her back to Rome.
Sgrena, 56, was abducted Feb. 4 by gunmen who blocked her car outside Baghdad University. Last month, she was shown in a video pleading for her life and demanding that all foreign troops - including Italian forces - leave Iraq.

I'm sorry, but when you won't stop for a road block? What do you really expect to happen?

Although it doesn't say they didn't stop for the roadblock in this article, I gather you have it off another source. It was stupid to drive past without stopping but that person is a hero, doing that, IMO.

Yeah, it was on the news report on the television. They were signalled to stop several times.

The media here don't mention that, at least in the main headlines. All they said was an Italien hostage who had been locked away for almost a month was shot and and a secret service member protecting him were killed by American troups. As RM will say, its the liberal media twisting it,

Good for them. It's not like the conservatives shy away from twisting the truth to further their goals either. Both sides use deception. That's the way it is. I think it's stupid, but it's the truth.

Good for them? It's not good for either side to try and manipulate the truth...

I agree. I'm just cynical about it by now.

Many bells. I doubt I could count all the political untruths that have been told to benefit one party or the other.

But nonetheless, you said "Good for them," and then you said, "I agree" to Theresa.

I did. The key is the second part of the "I agree" post. I was being sarcastic.

oh and you know, they were going at a reasonable speed and were fired upon without warning. but don't take the word of one of the survivors who was in the car. xD
it was on italian news if you were wondering.

What does that matter? They refused to stop. Don't tell me that they "didn't know", either. A road block. Soldiers w/ weapons. Soldiers aiming said weapons at you. I'd sure as hell stop.

they claim that they werent warned. (the ones who survived). it seems a bit premature to me.. i guess they'll shoot at anything that moves now?

They weren't warned! There was a ROAD BLOCK! What's a better warning than that? Someone standing in the center of the road, waiting to get run over? If they don't follow procedures, the troops have the RIGHT to shoot, and they SHOULD.

Yeah, I mean, come on. A war zone. A road block. Even American vehicles have to stop at their own road blocks. And I seriously doubt the soldiers were out for a bit of target practice. Or have we forgotten that soldiers are people as well?

i'm sorry but as of late, these named soldiers aren't seeming very much like people. maybe they shouldn't be there? i'm sure they would resume their humanity once they are removed. don't you think?
seriously, i feel sorry for the soldiers that have been killed and the people who were killed by them.

I find that statement crass and offensive.

Oy! You are so clouded by your pacifist views that you can't see that what our troops are doing is GOOD, and that their humanity IS intact! You do NOT understand the situation over there. Can't you give them the benefit of the doubt...for once?
