Trot criticizes A-Rod
Nixon doesn't view Rodriguez as a 'Yankee type'
By Ian Browne / MLB.com

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- With six weeks still remaining before the Red Sox and Yankees face off in their highly anticipated Sunday night opener in the Bronx, there is already tension in the air between the ancient rivals.
A few weeks ago, Alex Rodriguez expressed displeasure at Red Sox ace Curt Schilling, counterattacking some of the criticism the right-hander aimed at the star third baseman following his controversial "slap play" which cost the Yankees dearly in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series.

Red Sox right fielder Trot Nixon, who reported to camp well ahead of the Feb. 20 date for position players, took some shots at A-Rod on Tuesday.

Among other things, Nixon said that he didn't view Rodriguez as a "Yankee type".

"I don't look at him as that. He might be in a lot of people's eyes," Nixon told The Associated Press. "He's done some great things on the field. He's one of the best baseball players in the game and probably will be when it's all said and done. But when people ask me about the Yankees, I tell them about [Derek] Jeter and Bernie Williams and [Jorge] Posada. I don't tell them about Rodriguez. ... He can't stand up to Jeter in my book or Bernie Williams or Posada."

Schilling has said similar things about Rodriguez over the past few months, calling his slap of the ball out of Bronson Arroyo's hands a "bush league play" and saying A-Rod was "stupid" to charge Arroyo after being hit by the right-hander in a game played on July 24 at Fenway Park.

"I hope he continues to talk about me and the team," Rodriguez said of Schilling on Jan. 21. "It's great motivation to beat him in the future."

Efforts by The AP to get reaction from A-Rod on Nixon's comments were unsuccessful.

The Red Sox and Yankees, always fierce rivals, have taken it up a notch the last two years.

The Yankees made an epic comeback against the Red Sox in Game 7 of the 2003 American League Championship Series, roaring back from a 5-2 deficit and winning on Aaron Boone's walk-off homer in the 11th inning.

However, the Red Sox responded in a big way in the 2004 ALCS, becoming the first team in baseball history to overcome a 3-0 postseason series deficit. The Sox then went on to win their first World Series championship in 86 years.

The Red Sox and Yankees meet for the first time since the ALCS for an exhibition game on March 7 at City of Palms Park in Fort Myers.

They will once again play 19 regular season games, including the Yankee Stadium (April 3) and Fenway Park (April 11) season openers.

Tss, a bunch of Sox pitchers got fined for wearing the camoflage shirt under their uniforms, showing support for the troops. They wore them anyway and paid the fines.
