The JemHadar
I honestly have to say that I was not the biggest fan of them when they first showed up from the Gamma Quadrant on Deep Space Nine. At first glance they seemed to me to be a race much like the Borg crossed with Klingons, bread for War and Duty. The Vorta controlled the JemHadar with use of a drug, Ketracel-white. They would seem to do just about anything that the Vorta or Founders asked of them, If it were to go on a suicide mission into Federation territory or to go fetch a glass of tea, they would do as they were told. The JemHadar was the main backbone of the entire dominion. They were the army and they contained a large percentage of the entire dominion population.
There best technique that I found that the JemHadar used was there own personal cloaking device or shroud. Not even the Romulans or Klingons, who both have cloaking abilities, thought about cloaking there man forces in attack. With the ability to cloak in man to man combat, there would be little defense that anyone could have against them. There was a noticeable flaw though; it seemed that the Jem'Hadar could only Shroud when they had a certain amount of Ketracel-white in there system. They also seemed not to be able to stay cloaked during hand to hand combat.
What do you all think about the Jem'Hadar? Do you think that they were good valued members of the Dominion, or just another race that the Founders took advantage of?
Here is what StarTrek.com had to say about the Jem'Hadar:
Quote: | Jem'Hadar
Episode: DS9 446 - The Jem'Hadar
Planet: name unspecified.
The feared, leathery-skinned storm troopers genetically bred for that task by the Dominion Founders are not motivated by any of the causes of the Alpha Quadrant such as glory, nobility, politics, intrigue or even money though they do possess a chillingly detached mercenary quality that cannot be bribed.
They are not hive-mind automatons like the Borg but are genetically bred to supreme strength and endurance, kept in line via an addiction to Ketracel-white an enzymatic nutrient, dispensed with great ritual by each unit's Vorta, in vials which fit into the uniform and feed directly to the neck.
Military ranks are simply denoted as the First being unit leader, followed by the Second, Third, and so on; the First is answerable to the Vorta, who may reward and punish Jem'Hadar in the unit with on-the-spot promotions and demotions.
During the Dominion War a newer line dubbed "Alphans" have appeared, supplanting older Jem'Hadar types such as Gammas in being specifically bred for the Alpha Quadrant opponents while retaining the same physical appearance.
Jem'Hadar use the Dominion quick-shimmer transporter system, including an armband remote control and a personal cloaking device, or "shroud.". Their uniform also includes energy absorbing pads that can defeat a Starfleet Level 3 containment field, and a recessed collar-bone area to hold the Ketracel-white vial.
Only males are bred, gestated in birthing chambers and able to fight within three days of emergence; they mature rapidly, reaching the human equivalent of age 8 or 9 in two weeks. They do not sleep, require no food or drink except the Ketracel-white, enjoy vicious fighting, and exude superiority over all creatures except the Founders.

The Jem'Hadar are a great species. A lot better than the Borg and Klingons IMO. They are the foot soldiers of the Dominion. I can honestly imagine them filing out on planets and conquering worlds in the name of the Founders. I think that they were obviously duped into joining the Founders. MO is that they were a strong but very primitive warrior race. The Changelings pertended to be Gods and conquered them. They began to breed them to get more and did away with the females altogether. Many believe the Jem'Hadar were never an actual species, but rather just made. I think at one point they were an actualy species.

I have always thought that they were an actually race before the Joined with the Dominion, or conquered Im not sure. When the Founders took in the Vorta, a race of tree dwelling apes, they didnt know a black hole from a white hole. The dominion took things that were little and built them up into there army. The very same could be said about the JemHadar. Im not completely sure that a race could genetically design an entire race from scratch, My theory is that they took a JemHadar and altered him to what he was today, learning a way for cloning which is used on Vortas as well.

I agree. The Jem'Hadar was an actual race before the Dominion. The Founders probably bred the females out of the species. Not sure why though. Maybe they were weaker?

On the episode where Sisko and the Defiant had to team up with a JemHadar team to search for some kind of teleported / mirror into all the reaches of the galaxy, a JemHadar was asked about their women by one of the DS9 Crew, Quark I think, and he gave a reply that there was no JemHadar females. If the Founders did indeed breed the JemHadar from a race, they either had to have been asexual or there were females involved. I doubt thought that we will ever get the answer about there past. The writers in DS9 never did go that deep into their origin as I would have liked them to.

I think there were females before the Dominion, but the Dominion found little use for them and simply bred them out.

I am afraid I will have to disagree, Although the Founders always speak about being timeless and having patience they always want things done at a rather rapid rate, To have the females simply bred out would take a while.
I have a theory which is more likely (In my opinion).
The Founders searched the Gamma quadrant and took DNA samples of certain species.
For example, The Vorta have excellent hearing and poor eye sight.
So they went and picked one species that they had encountered and acquired their DNA, It contained the cells (Or whatever they are called) That provided them with excellent hearing, They then took the eye sight of another spieces, Which had poor eye sight and added it to the mix.
And slowly built up the Vorta, Into a species.
They probably also did the same with the Jem'Hader except they only created males, Who are in most species naturally stronger.
After all there are numourous occassions where Weyoung refers to the Founders and what they gave him (Eye sight, Hearing)
