Tue Feb 22, 2005 9:19 pm Anti-American Sentiment, etc. |
|
Check some of these things out. Tell me if there really isn't broad anti-American sentiment in Europe.
1. Polls in France say that 41% of French people dislike the US and only 30-some like (I can't remember the exact stat)
2. Just recently Germans have posted on school, youth center, and other places involving youth, drawn pictures of President Bush that say, "Go ahead, piss on me," on their toilets, JUST as President Bush has come to there, trying to "make peace!" Tell me that that is not horrible! Tell me!
3. Those 2 anti-American French books
4. AND MORE! There is TRULY major anti-American sentiment over there, and if you deny that, then with all due respect, you are quite blind.
Read this, too:

Playing games during the War on Terror: that is the subject of this evening's "Talking Points Memo."
This evening, President Bush threw a party for our pal Jacques Chirac (search), the president of France. The soiree was held in Brussels at the home of the American ambassador to Belgium. Everyone had a swell time, we're sure.
But the question is should Mr. Bush be kissing up to a man who has hurt America in the terror fight? There's no question Chirac has done that. If France had kept its promise to Colin Powell (search) and enforced the U.N. resolutions on the WMD (search) search in Iraq, there would have been no war.
But as we know, France had the potential to make billions in Iraq dealing with Saddam. And Chirac sold the USA out. That's not an opinion, that is a fact. And as we reported last week, Chirac now says Hezbollah (search) is not a terrorist group, again making the war on terror much more difficult for everybody. And this guy gets a party?
German Chancellor Schroeder (search) will also get a party. Mr. Bush will see him tomorrow. And the two will give a joint press conference saying how swell everything is. This is the same Schroeder who sold America out for votes and still will not help the USA inside Iraq.
And then there's Vladimir Putin (search). He gets a party as well. Putin last week said Iran is not a nuclear threat because he wants to sell Iran weapons. He also supported the fraudulent election in the Ukraine (search) and is throwing his opponents in Russian jails. Putin certainly is a party guy.
So what's going on here? Well, it's obvious President Bush wants the world to think he's a uniter, not a divider. So this is a P.R. gambit designed to soften hostility against the USA. That's a good thing and a necessary thing. The more partners we get to fight terror, the better.
Henry Kissinger (search) told me on the radio today he believes Putin and Schroeder will eventually help in the war on terror, but Chirac never will. The French president simply dislikes America too much.
But Mr. Bush has to give it a try, has to hang out with old Jacques. And we Americans have to watch it unfold and hope something good happens. In the meantime, we should not buy French stuff, should not trust Putin and Schroeder, and should feel sad that the world is so messed up.
And that's "The Memo."

Um, no, the extent is not. Maybe some dislike and distaste is fine, but this anti-American sentiment...No.

I don't say it's a good thing (but I also don't say it isn't), but many people think of Bush as a monkey who forces his form of government etc. upon other nations. And many (Dutch) people think Americans in general are dumb, fat, fastfood-eating hippos.

I like America as well. I think freedom of opinion is ok, but the stupid thing is that most of these people who think this are doing it because everyone else does. That, IMO is a stupid reason.

I like America. Who can't like a big land mass?
There are parts of American culture I like, and others I dislike. Overall, the Americans I've personally spoken to tend to be nice, polite, and just great people. Thanks to those souls on the Internet, I'm currently in the "I like America overall" catagory. I still think the war in Iraq could have been handled better, although you have to make the best of a bad job and things seem to be going ok there at the moment, and some of the priorities seem to be a bit screwed up (I personally think North Korea is a lot more dangerous to the entire world than Iran, but the US government seems to disagree). The human rights record for the US makes disappointing reading, and I'm currently supporting a campaign to stop Babar Ahmad from being extradited there as he and his family are sure he'll be treated better in the UK courts than the US ones (apparently having a very old copy of the Empire State Building tourguide makes you a terrorist to the US government- you have been warned!). The environmental issues seem to be getting worse, and I completely dislike capitalism, but apart from that, the people are great, most of the values most of it's people hold are sound, and its not too badly run

RM doesn't hate the French. He has already said so. He just dislikes the HUGE amount of French Anti-AmericanSentiment. Sorry we don't like it when people bash our nation. Besides most of the Fench hating comes from me. So bitch at me.

Er... doesn't the USA have the highest rate of obesity in the western world? Maybe it's something to do with that
America for me stands for either nice people (sometimes a little extreme on some views) or envionmentally unfriendly gas guzzling cars and big business keeping half the world in poverty. Take your pick

Yes i agree, i don't go a day in this country without hearing something bad about america.
Yes, some of the things that are said and judged i do agree with, but lately it is just seeming to get out of hand. I mean yes America has alot of problems but other countries do too. But those countrys look to
America and begin to think that life where they are isn't so bad. With everything that is happening with america these days and everything thats changing. People see some of the bad things that are happening in America and they focus on that and when ever America is mentioned they think of the bad problems and nothing good.
But remember what i said. Yes there is ALOT of Anti-Americaism around and especially in the UK

Agreed. And LOL, "Hippo, Michael Moore." LOL!
But yes, the majority of French people have an "unfavorable opinion" of the US, while a MINORITY (yes, 30%ish IS SMALL) has a "more favorable opinion..."

Do any of the other Americans find it odd that we don't hear "anti-anyone" comments everyday? Or very often, for that matter. We silly intolerant want everyone to be exactly like us Americans.

You're entitled to your opinions, yes, but the broad anti-American sentiment is what I am proving. Defiant denied it. We're just bringing in more proof. And this isn't good, though...

People do have the right to their opinions. Some people say "love it or leave it." I'd much rather stay here and try to turn our country around for the better. Diversity makes our society great. I do not like President Bush or the current state of our government. I do not like capitalism. I do not like individualism. I am against the American Dream in most traditional senses, and I'm not afraid to say it. You know why? Because our constitution gives me the right to live here and speak out against my government. I applaud those who speak out against America's government, just as I'm happy to listen to those who speak out for it. The basis of our country is that we don't all have to be alike for us to live together and get along; and that's one ideal I never intend to let go of.

Sure, 30%ish would be a miserable score in an exam, but in this context 30%ish is still 18,000,000 people (that's million, not a couple of froggies, a name you most likely assign to them). Or are you always going to be ungrateful? Would 99%ish be better for you? 100%ish?

Actually, 50-60%ish.

I'm with Theresa. I hardly have ever heard anything rude about other countries, and that I have, only Americans who dislike the French (and even that only on the internet). So, I find this rather funny. I mean, how ignorant. But, that's the way it goes.
And.... its not as if EVERYONE is overweight in America. Its not as if everytime you leave the house, you see obese people everywhere. In fact, there really aren't that many, from one person's perspective. But thats what statistics are out there to disprove, anyway.

Actually, I way less than my age is supposed to!
And yes, I agree with the first part, although there is a logic dislike of the French government, but although I think the people are misguided, I don't dislike them.

Pull the other one. You wouldn't spit on a Frenchman if he was on fire. What's the point in denying it? You absolutely detest the French people...that they could produce these vile, anti-American jibes in such frequency.
I suppose you hate mostly everyone outside of the continent you live on.

Oh my gosh! That is COMPLETELY un-true, and don't you DARE say "stop denying it." Do you know me? DO YOU KNOW ME? NO, you DON'T! I WOULD call the police if a Frenchman was on fire, and I do NOT detest the French! Sure, I don't like them too much because of their anti-American sentiment toward us, but you are making it look like I HATE them, and that, Mr. Kyre, is NOT TRUE! You have NO RIGHT to make such accusations.

I guess that particular phrase hasn't reached your corner of the globe yet. Indeed, I'd be shocked if anyone didn't call the police if they saw someone on fire (and the fire brigade too, I presume...and the ambulance). What it means is that you very much hate that particular person/object.
You can deny it if you wish, but I still believe you do, although there is no certainty in that and I suppose I did come across quite harsh in that last post. Nevertheless, you did just admit to not liking the French, when in your previous post you said quite the opposite.

You can believe it, but sir, you can be wrong too. And you, sir, are wrong. (And disliking the French to some extent is NOT distaste or hatred )

Those are perhaps the most presumptuous and ignorant things that have been said in this topic so far.
