The city has filed an application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office to trademark the slogan, "The World's Second Home," which would give New York City the exclusive rights to use it to promote business and tourism, report The Associated Press and The New York Times. Expect to see the phrase attached to more than 200 products and services--from mouse pads to money clips and theatrical productions to temporary tattoos. The Times notes that generations of immigrants in New York have long known that the city really is the world's second home.
Why the sudden quest for a new moniker? It has a lot to do with the city's bid to host the 2012 Olympics. Mayor Michael Bloomberg knows how the system works. The billionaire businessman has been quite aggressive in filing for city trademarks and patents, including an application for licensing the phrase "Made in NY."
A bit of Big Apple trivia: New York City was nicknamed "The Big Apple" in the 1970s by the New York Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Which raises the question, where is the world's first home? Various war-torn nations in eastern Europe, Asia and Africa I guess. That could be good for business too. Bosnia: Torn by war, the World's First Home.

I think that the main reason for this has a lot to do with 9/11. To be honest, I think New Yorker's need to back off and realize that they weren't the only ones affected. The places hit were where ALL Americans came together. Notice how the familes of the people in the twin towers were mourning all over the US, even all over the world. Yes, we lost a lot of Firemen and Police Officers of New York, but that was their choosing. They chose a job with great risks. My Uncles a firefighter, and I think he's just as much of a hero as those we lost on 9/11. He risks his life daily to save others, and isn't that the real reason they were heroes?
