In my opinion, I really thought this episode was quite good. It brought the Enterprise crew closer to me and it was the beginning of the United Federation of Planets (as the commercials said). I thought this was so good that I'd give it a 9.0 out of 10.

Yeah.. he scared the hell outta me... LOL
Are Andorians known for their outstanding reflexes or complicated neural pathways?? That could explain a lot...
When I saw that ship outmaneuver the phase cannons I got lost. Look, that a Borg as a walking computer can do that stuff, k. But an Andorian hooked up to some subspace transmitters?
Looked really cool tho...

Well, this is kind of a spoiler, but the alien wasn't Andorian.
Quote: | The alien was Aenar.....a subspiecies on Andoria, whose telepathic abilities allow them to control ships with their minds. | [/quote]

Actually.....I think the Aenar have been mentioned long before now....I'm not sure if it was another series, or an episode from an earlier season. So I don't think it's just a "cheap plot device" Well, either way, I think the conclusion to this arc this Friday should be real interesting.

Kuro-chan rating: 9/10
This episode is simply "Wow" in my books, and for me makes it the first Enterprise episode to reach "9/10"
I enjoyed a great deal of this episodes as it covered a lot of ground, like.
- Travis and Hoshi getting a decent long scene together as they work to figure out how to get their captain out of fighting with Shran.
- Reed demonstrating to Trek fans that overloading your Phase Pistol DOES result in a big boom. (And I never saw that one coming, since I figured he was simply desperate to save Trip.)
- Archer using unpredictable tactics to defeat Shran in the challenge. Also, the timing for the commercial break was beautiful as you can see Archer moving in with his weapon just as the scene cuts out.
- Watching Shran and the Tellatrite ambassador shaking hands, as well as a combined fleet of Vulcan, Andorian and Tellarite ships along with Enterprise. Did that feel like a Federation or what?!
- The mysterious alien in the end who looked like an Andorian... made me suspicious as to what was going on. (I try to avoid spoilers as best I can, because I don't want to lose the surprise. It helps me to generate a more honest rating.)
There is of course a lot more to this episode than simply a few scenes, but it bothered me that Talas' death was not shown on-screen but was rather off to the side, especially since she was important to Shran. I felt they could have paid more attention to this part and made it seem a lot more dramatic. For me though, this was enough to drop the episode down to a 9.
