PostWed Nov 24, 2004 3:34 pm    Younger Kids playing games rated at M.

I heard on my television that younger kids under the age of 18 or 17 that are playing games that are playing games that are rated M for Mature. And thier parents dont even know thier playing these types of games. In my opion its wrong and I think the parents should get rid of these games from thier kids game collections and let them play thier proper game rated E for everyone. The games im referring to are Mortal Kombat games and Grand Theft Auto games and any other games are rated at M.
I bring up this cause ived seen kids buy these kinda games without telling thier parents.

So my question is do you think parents should get rid of theses games from thier kids and let them play the proper rated games. And explain your reason why.

I don't I'm 16 (17 Next month though) and have been playing games rated (M) for a few years now (As well as watching Movies Rated 'R'
I think that M should be lowered for age levels, I can't buy any Games without a person older than 17 years of age and It's rather annoying...

Ummm..... well.... Some parents actually buy these games for their kids cause some parents think it's lame that games should be rated a certain uh... rate. but yes i do think parents should do that.

Violent Games DO NOT make kids more violent. It's bad parenting that makes violent kids.

Carmageddon was cool! I still hear my dad read it in the newspaper and saying: "well, my children aren't going too play this.". I've played all 3 of them.....Still do.

I dont do that! No, really.. I don't...
Pfft, I think they don't affect you, as long as you're mentally stable. A mentally very unstable person might be affected by them to an exten thou,

Game ratings should be guidelines, not legal requirements. I feel the same way about movies and pornography (and smoking and drinking, but that's beside the point). Parents and children have the combined intelligence to know what's best for them, and it's not the government's place to censor products just because some people don't like them.

Honestly, I don't think they should take them away. Some of the games that are rated M don't even have "bad material" in it or such, but games that are obviously labeled for 18 years or older do. Most video games don't do much anyway, sure some are the causes of "deaths" or "accidents", but that is just because of the kids stupidity to act out what they see. In my opinion, games are games, just play them and leave it at that...don't do what ya see.

Under 18 or 17? Dude I'm 16. In fact, a whole lot of people on this site are 16 and younger. I don't think 8 year olds should be playing it, but most of these "age requirements" are rediculous. I couldn't even buy the matrix because you have to be 17!!! How STUPID is that?! Ughh! These age requirements are so utterly stupid!

I tried to buy Perfect Dark once and they wouldn't let me. That's the only problem I've ever had.

I'm sixteen, and I may be considered one of the "youger kids" but, I've never been too much of a gamer.

It does kinda make me nervous though, when I hear some 4th-6th graders talking about what they did in Mortal Kombat or something. I probably wouldn't mind playing the game myself, but when kids are playing games like that at that young of an age, it really messes with their minds. I know people that are my age, and older, that have been playing M rated games since they were young, that are not really bad people or anything, but they're a little crazy. I'm not saying all people turn out to be like that, but I've just noticed this as a trend around people I know>>>M rated games at young age=extremely weird, and kinda scary person at times.

No offense to anyone who consideres themselves extremely weird or kinda scary.

I'm not really into video games much, but with movies and stuff it's the same. You can't get into or buy or rent an R rated movie if you're under 17. It's soooo stupid! I've been watching R rated mvoies since like, 4th grade and PG-13 since I was like, 7. It's not a big deal! Kids don't even get the sex jokes anyways! Now if something is extremely violent, really young kids shouldn't see it, but it totally depends on the individual kid and parents. It's not the governments responsibillity to protect kids from violent video games or movies, it's the parents. And come on, 17? Why not 15 or 16? That's so rediculous. Oooo the government's trying to protect me from The Matrix!

There are some things in movies and games that aren't apporopriate for people under that age. I mean, just ask your parents to buy it for you or whatever, sheesh.

Well, things like that aren't to strictly enforced. Its stupid, if you don't want your kids to buy the games, don't give them money. Simple.

Actually, violent games makes violent kids, however, it's the parents responsibility to not let that happen.

I'm sick of all you people saying that the ratings are a joke, and I'm glad that there's a rating system so younger kids aren't exposed to the more violent games, even though sometimes they are. You just want to say that you hate the ratings because it doesn't benefit YOU. Well guess what, the world doesn't and shouldn't revolve around such selfish people. I heard a TRUE story (please don't ask me for my sources because I don't have any) about a young kid who played Grand Theft Auto, and when he was finished he somehow got some brother's (or was it babysiter's) car keys and took this car for a spin, which ended up in his injury or death (I can't remember which). Ask yourself this: Do I want to be on the road when a child has access to a car and is taking a joy ride? NO!!! THE RATING SYSTEM IS TO KEEP STUPID PEOPLE FROM DOING STUPID THINGS!!!

I disagree, Violent games do not make violent kids, its like saying because a kid play grad theift auto hes gonig to take a gun to school the next day and shoot people. Its the parents....not the games. Bad Parenting makes bad kids.

Violent games don't make violent children. Children who are left unattended, and taught no values or morals make violent children. If a child is taught the difference between right and wrong at an early age, and shown how to make good decisions, then a violent video game will be nothing other than an enjoyable passtime.
