PostTue Nov 16, 2004 8:17 pm    Solitary Poet

I would just like to say that after this week is over Im not coming back due to work and violin study. That and also the fact that I am currently writing a book. I no longer have time for forums and message boards. I had a lot of fun and will miss all of you. I would also like to ask Chakotay99 to let the people over at the HELIX know that I wont be there any more since I dont have time to post this over there and I cant make it today so I probably wont.

Hey, theres a good chance that I could be moving from Texas to Scotland for a while sometime in the next two years, does any on this message board live over there? Ill probably end up near Gigha off the coast of Man.

Is your book about the secret child of Marylin Monroe and JFK growing up as an orphan and then going to London when she grows up to solve a great mystery?

No. Im writing a sort of writing a post-apocalyptic homage to H. G. Wells, though it doesnt actually have anything to do with any of wells works. Im not very good but I could post an excerpt if you wonted. My work is still basically a rough draft and the message board normally changes the format so you cant tell where one paragraph begins and another ends but I think you would get the general idea.

My novel is going to be called Empire of One and it is about the last two people on the planet. The story is told from the oppressors point of view. I wont the person being oppressed to be as irritating and annoying as possible so that the reader will side with the one telling the story until its to late and hes gone to far. You see, I wont the reader to be on the side of the bad guy for most of the book so that they will see what they are capable of. I wont the reader to feel guilty when the book evolves into the ramblings of a mad man and the situation becomes obvious. Im trying to make Empire of One a cross between Cast Away and 1984 sort of like the original version of Lord of The Flies. Of course just because thats what I wont to do doesnt mean thats what Im going to do. Im not that good of a writer. The only reason I write is because thats just what I like to do.

If I find out that anybody is trying to pass my work off as their own I will prosecute them and I will win. Please dont Quote my work yet, my editor will kill me and then I will have to kill you.

Excerpt from 'Empire of One' chapter two wrote:
When I awoke, at first there was nothing. Then. Then there was something. It was a light. A small point of brilliance that shocked me with its suddenness. Then. Then, again there was nothing. There was no way of telling how long it must have lasted: nothingness hasnt any duration in time. Then again the light came. And the light grew, and across the face of the light, darkness swept. Then I lost consciousness. But unconsciousness wasn't the same as nothing, it was filled with dreams. I dreamed of a room, pungent with cat urine, some where a litter box needed changing. I knew that room. I knew it very well. But I had no idea when or where I knew it from. Then pain. Something exploded in my head. I shot upright, and then there was an implosion, and the pain was gone. I drifted back to sleep.
When again I awoke, it was nearly dusk, and found that I was the last living thing on the planet Earth, there were no people, no dogs, no cats, trees, shrubs, fish, bugs, nothing, save for me. What had happened?
Fresh water. . . I had a sudden craving for fresh water. My throat was parched and my lungs still burned with pain. There was an unexplained metallic taste in my mouth. How long had I been sleeping? I pondered for a while. My mind was blank. It must have been a long time, because I was aching for something to drink. Food. . . I was also very hungry-I felt a pain in my stomach for some nourishment; I needed to find some food and fast, before I was too weak to even move.
I must have wondered about with my pain for over an hour before I found a half standing building. Apparently anything and everything that had even once been living had vanished, and that included the wood, and tree fiber based drywall that was used in the construction of houses. Even plant and animal based plastics and rubbers had disappeared. Everything was gone.
The Earth was now nothing more than vast ruinous wasteland of rock, metal and glass. As the wind swirled about me I realized I was completely and utterly alone, but I refused to give up hope as long as I was alive and standing.
After several hours of drifting in a dazed depression, I wondered in to the ruins of a demolished grocery store. I tripped over a piece the still standing steel frame of the building. I pushed myself into a sitting position. My hands almost gave out and noticed a tin can lying in front of me, so I picked it up off the ground. Rite away I realized that it was heavy, there was something inside! In an elated huff I grabbed a brick from what was left of the store's wall and smashed it open with glee. Creamed corn-glorious golden goop gushed fourth from the can, and I knew that I was saved from a slow death by starvation. I closed my eyes and almost began to cry. Somehow canned food had survived thru whatever had happened to the Earth.
I began to think about the implications of what I had found. I sat staring at the ground for a long time and then suddenly a thought hit me like something that falls off a shelf. A false joy welled up inside me; other people must still be alive. I remember watching a show on the science channel about some scientists in Greenland who had sealed themselves up in a giant tin can as an experiment to simulate what it would be like to live on Mars. Surly they must have must have survived? And what about the people that live in underground laboratories, or the people that work in the vaults of the great banks and treasuries. After some thought I decided to call it the tin can effect. Many if not most of the survivors probably don't even know that anything has happened yet. Anyway it didn't matter, because Texas alone is so big that even if one-hundred people in this hot state survived, my chances of running into just one person in my lifetime were close to nil. My stomach sank in a pit of despair. I was lost. Lost for all time.
Just then, as if from space a harsh high pitched scream startled me out of my stupor, proving me wrong. I raced towards the sound as fast as I could, not to help but out of greed-I wonted someone else to be alive for my sake. As I ran half hazarded down the bank of Ten Mile Creek I found were the scream was coming from. A girl was sitting on a rock by the water with her back to me, frozen in terror. It struck me as odd that the creek still had water in it. I came up behind her, she didn't notice me. I felt fear wash over me-didn't know what frightened her so much. A shutter went through my bones. Just then I saw the sightless dog standing on the surface of the water, without sinking! You can not imagine the emotions, the fear that welled up inside me. I tried to scream, but managed nothing but a hiss. Before I could look away the outline of the dog (if it even was a dog) disappeared into thin air. It was gone.
I almost put my hand on her back to comfort her, but I was too scared-she didn't even know who I was. Who knows what a person in that state might think or do? What would I do? I over came my reservations and touched her, she spun 'round wild-eyed with her arms in the air, knocking me on my back! At once she realized that I was human and rushed upon me as I was getting up and gave me the biggest bear hug I had ever received in my entire life. Then the strangest thing happened. Who knows why these things happen, but at that exact moment I finally realized that the only friends I had in the world were gone, forever. My hands started to shake like tree on a windy day. I felt a wave of tears welling up behind my eyes. I tried to push her away, but she would have none of it and in a panic of sorrow, with all my might I shoved her to the ground. The pain of sudden sadness was so great I could no longer see that another human being was right in front of me. The world was closing in around me. "They're gone, they're gone," Crying, I whispered to myself over and over again. "They're gone."

In my selfish pain at the loss of my friends, I sat down on a rock to sulk. My world was gone, and I cared for no one and nothing, except for myself. The girl just laid where I pushed her in a trance. My friends were dead she could die to for all I cared. So there we sat, and there we stayed, for over Two hours we did nothing. As the sun was setting, the air about us began to gain a chill. Thats when she spoke to me for the first time. I remember it all as if it was only a moment ago. Even now as I commit these events to page, it some how strikes me as an odd thing; how she was able to speak to me so soon after all that had just happened to us and the world?
"Whats your name?"
I jumped at the sudden start. "Shlomo", I replied, "Shlomo Stern."
"My name's Cadence-Cadence Anne Rhode."
"Cadence, thats a nice name," I said, "I like it."
"Thanks."
"How do you spell your middle name?"
"A-N-N-E, like in Anne of Green Gables."
"Neat. Listen," I said, thinking. "It's getting dark; we can't just stay here all night in the cold."
"Why not? Theres no place to go."
"We should at least get up out of this creek bed and find someplace flat to sleep."
Cadence pondered. Finally she said, "I'm not going to sleep tonight."
"Why not?"
"I just don't feel like it, is all," She said. "And besides how do I know you won't kill me for food in the middle of the night?"
"First off, I'm not a cannibal, and second, theres already plenty of food, I found some right before I heard you scream."
"Were?!"
"In the Diamond Shamrock. I think all of the canned food survived what ever it was that did this. I also think some people may have been saved the same way."
Cadence got to her feet. "Show me the food," she said. "I'm hungry."
"I'll show you in the mourning. For now I-"
"What?! Take me now!" She said with a huff.
"It's getting too dark for that," I said. We might hurt ourselves, and there are no doctors anymore. Even a small injury can kill us now."
Cadence crossed her arms. "I don't care, take me!"
"Listen!" I said raising my voice. "I'm going to sleep now weather you like it or not. You can either come with me, or stay here by yourself and be alone. Either way the choice is yours."
And with that I got to my feet and started walking up the bank to Maple Street. When I got to the top by the road, I looked behind me to see that Cadence was fallowing me about twenty feet behind in a tired limp. For some reason I wished that I hadn't found her. I actually wonted her to go away. I walked all the way down the dead-end street and found what I thought was my front lawn. I stood in the middle of what was now nothing more than a large sand box. Looking up at the sky, wondering what had happened to the stars, I decided to lie down. I closed my eyes wishing I could just despair. I must have fallen asleep as soon as my head hit the sand, because I don't remember anything else that happened that night.

DAY ONE

I awoke as soon as the sun was above the horizon. The new day left me with a strange sense of calm, I must have slept off most of the previous days traumas. Cadence Anne Rhode was sleeping about twelve feet away from me by the street. It was early so I decided to let her rest a little wile longer before I would wake her. I climbed up the concrete steps that that had once been my front porch, and for the first time I was able to survey my new surroundings. I looked about me to see if any traces of animal life still remained. I cannot even begin to controvert the sense of abominable desolation that hung over the world. The Earth was a vast wasteland as far as I could see, with nothing but rocks, sand, and rubble. In several places there were large pools of water. The Lancaster water tower must have drained its self when the buildings collapsed destroying all of the pipes and waterworks.
I stared across my new world wishing I knew more about what had happened. Why was I all alone? The wind blew and dust swept across the ground. Beyond these lifeless sounds the world was silent. Silent? It would be hard to convey the stillness of it all. The sounds of man, the rumble of cars and machines, the barking of dogs, the songs of birds, the buzz of insects, the stir that once made up the background of our lives-all that was over. All that mankind had worked so hard for had come to nothing. I felt the stress of the unknown nipping at my mind like the sea nips at the shore. I thought this must have been what the Time Traveler from H.G.Wells The Time Machine felt like, when he viewed his new world of 802,701 from the seat of golden metal. I fancied myself as Wells Time Traveler and these steps as my seat of gold. From here I could see that the water tower was some how still standing, though it no longer had any paint to protect it from wind and rust. I decided that later I must try to clime the tower and get a better look at things. But for now I was growing decidedly hungrier by the second, so I made the decision to wake Cadence from her slumber.
I walked over to where she lay sleeping. "Cadence, wake up," I whispered nudging her shoulder. "Cadence Anne Rhode, come on, it's time get up." So much for not going to sleep, I thought to myself. Her eyes opened, and for a moment she stared at me not knowing who I was. Suddenly recognition washed over her face as she remembered where she was. "I thought you weren't going to sleep last night," I said with a smile.
"I'm hungry," Cadence said blinking her eyes. "Where are we?
"We're in whats left of my front yard; at least I think we are"
"What's your name again?"
"Shlomo."
"Now I remember," said Cadence. "You were going to show me were the food was, right?"
"That's why I woke you up," I said stretching out my hand. "Come with me. We have to find a bridge as soon as possible, after we eat."
"Why?" she said "Are you looking for trolls?"
"No!" I said. "As you can tell, for some reason there are no buildings around here anymore, and if we don't find something to give us shade, like a bridge that still hasn't fallen down, I'm afraid we're going to develop a bad case of sun burn."
Cadence got to her feet, and I turned towards the direction of what I estimated to be nearest store, with my new friend in tow. It took us a little longer to reach food than I thought it would, but we found some just the same. Cadence just looked at cans I found without doing anything. I could tell she was a little puzzled. "We don't have a can opener," she said sounding quite stupid. I looked around, grabbed a brick, and handed it to her. "Swing away!" I said with glee. And before I could blink she'd already smashed open three cans, and was digging in with a spoon she'd found in some rubble. I'd never seen some one eat so fast in all my life, it was as if she simply absorbed everything she touched. I felt like I was getting full just by watching her.
"Woh! Slow down," I said with a half smile. "The food isn't going to just get up and walk away. Save some for me!"
"I can't help it," she said, with her mouth full. "I haven't eaten in almost over twenty-four hours!"
"I haven't eaten ether," I said, grabbing a can. "I mean, I was about to but I heard you scream. You act like you haven't eaten in weeks."
"And your point is?" She said, lifting another mouth full of canned mush.
"Eating that fast isn't healthy for you."
"Like you actually care, you don't even know me."
"Do you even know what you're eating?" I said smashing open the top of my can, and trying not to spill all of its goopy green contents. "Dog food comes in cans too you know?"
"Thanks for the nice thoughts, skinny boy."
"You're a hand full aren't you?" I said with a smirk.
"Well I try," Cadence said sarcastically.
I decided to let her finish eating before I would start talking again. After I finished some canned vegetable matter I opened another can, this time it was filled with some sort of meat stuff. I stuck a hand full of the "food" in my mouth and swallowed hard, hoping it wasn't intended for some ones pet. Nice thoughts indeed. It tasted very familiar. I realized the mush was only taco filling and I deflated in a sigh of relief.
"Grab a couple of cans for later," I said with a start. "We need to find a bridge and start making some plans on how we're going to do things around here."
"Plans?" quizzed Cadence.
"We should start thinking long term. You know, like how we're going to survive through next winter with only the clothes on our backs?"
"I'm not going to worry about that stuff," said Cadence, as if some how I had said something ignorant. "I'm sure people are out there looking for us right now. I don't know about you, but I'm hoping things will be back to normal by the time next winter gets here."
"What?!" I didn't know weather she was stupid or just in denial. I was hoping it was just denial, because people can get over denial, but they can't get well from stupidity. "What have you seen that would suggest even the remotest possibility of this disaster being only a local thing?!" I said raising my voice. "And what could possibly make you think that all of civilization could some how be completely rebuilt by NEXT WINTER!!"
"Come on! Dont have a cow." Cadence said, obviously offended.
"Don't have a cow?" I said, filling with anger. "Don't have a cow? Is that all you have to say? The world has ended, we are quite possibly the last people on the planet, and all you have to say is don't have A COW?!!
Cadence looked at me as if I was crazy. "I don't know what your problem is, but what ever it is you need help."
I felt like ripping her head off. "Don't know what my problem is? I said, trying to contain myself. "Have you been paying attention to any thing that has happened in the last forty-eight hours?"
"Take a chill pill."
"Oh my word! Every person we have ever met or spoken to, every one I have ever cared about has been wiped out, and you are as calm as a bleeping lumberjack in July!"
"Why are you swearing?"
"The question is why are you not swearing? I said, pointing my finger in her face. "You certainly have plenty reason to."
"You're acting like the world is ending."
"IT JUST DID!!" I screamed at her with my fists clenched. "Think!"
"I'm sorry, I just don't-"
"It is very important to your health that you not finish that sentence!" I said cutting her off.
"But I don't-"
"Don't say another word," I hissed, grinding my teeth. "You don't wont to talk to me right now."
"I just think-"
"GYAH!!" I yelled in anger. "Don't you ever know when to just SHUT UP?!! With that said I jumped to my feet and started marching north towards I-20 in search of a bridge, kicking everything in my path along the way. I thought I heard Cadence still trying to speak as I walked away, but I was still to angry to understand anything she said. I didn't know how I was going to get it through to her the world was never going to be the same ever again, never.

I can tell by your silence that I need to work on quite a bit more. Just remember that this is only rough draft material and does not necessarily reflect the final version of the passage.
