Sunday night I saw the northern lights for the 1st time in my life ever!! I have been wanting to see them for SOOOOO long!! It was the absolute most coolest thing ever. It was like this erie mystical awstriking thing all at once. Anyways, in Aug. i also saw a meteor shower for the first time!! At first i was like.. "there's a lot of airplanes up in the sky", but then i realized, that it was the meteor shower that they said was gonna happen. It looked like airplanes flashing their lights just once, but all over the sky! It was pretty cool!! Anyways, those are my two exciting space stories.

They said that there would be Northern Lights here tonight too

I was just about to go out for a walk and look if I could see any... I've never seen it before and I think it isn't all cloudy right now...

I used to work at an observatory...not *the* greatest telescopes, but we saw cool stuff. The international space station, for example, is entertaining. Not impressive, but interesting to be able to see. Not to mention Mars...when it was super-close last year...you could see the icecaps. THE coolest stuff to look at, though, is the Blinking Nebula (Yes! It blinks! And it's BLUE!

), M31--Andromeda Galaxy (The story about her, Cassiopea, and Cephus is what really makes her interesting), and M57--the Ring Nebula (The "green cheerio"). Also, there's a great cluster called the "Wild Duck" Cluster. Supposedly, it looks like a bunch of ducks. I say it's a chicken. I would post pics, but the site I get them from is down... Never have seen the northern lights, m'self. Looks cool.

I watched that meteor shower too. I stayed up really late and went outside barefoot and just stood in one place for like 45 minutes. Unfortunately I've never seen the northern lights.

I watched the latest Sun Eclipse. At my position only a part of the sun was eclipsed but it got a little bit darker that day. we had too use 3 sunglasses to be able to look at it properly.

out in alberta i used 2 watch them all the time... they're amazing(Northern lights i mean)

It may sound corny but we really do live in a beautiful universe. It would be nice to think that one day all the answers will be revealed and we could hold eternity and infinity in our hands.

oh yea i forgot a bunch of stuff and u all helped me remember! I saw hailey's comet when that thing was flying around here, there was a lunar eclipse last year - saw that. There was one just recently like a week or so ago too - couldn't see that one b/c it was all cloudy out.. bummer!! Hmm what else...? Oh yea, this spring Jupiter and Saturn were out every single night. I've got a big telescope, so i would drag that thing out to look at everything! I saw Jupiter's moons, and Saturn's rings - it was SOOO awesome! Also have see Mars.

SFDentist - you're sooo right about us having such a beautiful universe!! If i had it my way, i'd have a house w/ a clear ceiling so i could lay in bed and just stare at the stars each night when they'd be out!! Right now i've got glow in the dark stars all over the ceiling and walls, and hanging from the ceiling.. so that'll have to do till i get that clear ceiling

This is my favorite quote. It's from the X-Files and talking about the stars. But whenever I go out on a clear night, I like to think about it like that. It's cool.

My friends and I used to lay out on the tramp on summer nights for hours just looking at the stars.... I guess that's my only space story. But I think stars are the best catalyst for good conversation.

My old chemistry teacher has land up in the mountains and we go up there every year and have a "star party". Just camping out under the stars and he gets out his big telescopes and we look at planets and stuff. it's so cool. Plus up there, it seems like you're so much closer to the stars and they're everywhere. It's so amazing how little we can see from the city, even just outside the city.

Oh yeah.. and I saw a UFO at a night Rockies baseball game. for real

omg the Northern Lights are so cool.. or at least I think, from your picture, and I also saw it in a movie.. I would love to see it with my own eyes!!

I've not actually seen them, although they "should" be common here, there's a song made up about the northern lights of old Aberdeen,

That's actually a really good picture of the lights though Alison, one of the best I've seen. I love all the stuff to do with space. The pictures of Nebula's are stunning, as well as eclipse's, which I saw a few years ago, and the Northern Lights.

yea well.. what can ya do!! haha! i've got personal home video of my friend taping me when i was driving once!! We were going to the airport to surprise a friend who was visiting and she was filming me in the car. i took the video camera from her for a moment and almost drove off the road so i gave it back

See!!!!!!!!!! You'd never catch us British people doing that. We'd just not admit it and get away with it,

My sister managed to totally freak another driver out as her friend was driving, but my sister steered from the passanger seat, with her hands low down. When a driver came from the other direction her friend in the drivers seat waved her hands around and so on, and the other driver was supposed to have looked very scared for a while!

Anyway, better get back on topic! The sky has been quite clear here for the last few nights, but I never saw anything amazing apart from the stars, space, etc,

I don't get the Aroura Borialis (northern lights) in New Zealand, because we're in the southern hemisphere, and we're too far north to get any really good views of the Aroura Australis (southern lights). In fact in NZ we don't get much of anything... when there are solar eclipsis in America, it's always night time here, and all the metor showers happen durning the day too.

I've seen lots of satellites. And at the beginning of the year, my school has a little mini camp for all the year 9's, and I run an astronomy part of that. I'm really into space, and whenever we have bbqs, after the sun has set I show everyone the different constallations.

When I go to uni I'm going to do a BSc in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

Not really a space story but hey!

No i think that sounds really cool! You NZers may not have the stars and stuff, but where you live is one of the most beautiful places i have EVER seen!! A friend of mine studied over there for a year and i was looking at his pictures - absolutly stunning!! You have everything from gorgeous mountains, never ending forests, cool rock formations, beaches, waterfalls, rolling hills - everything!! I'm SOOO jealous b/c the Doctor i work for is going there for a month with his wife in Feb! So not fair

!!

Anyways, i wish you luck with all your space stuff that you're going to get into!!
