Officials: Arafat's Condition Worse
Wednesday, November 03, 2004
PARIS Yasser Arafat (search), hospitalized in France with a mystery ailment, was rushed to intensive care after suffering a setback and was undergoing a new round of tests, Palestinian officials said early Thursday.
The two officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the 75-year-old Arafat's condition had seriously deteriorated over the past day, adding that doctors who have been examining him since Friday still don't know the cause of his illness.
French hospital and military officials refused to comment, but more information was expected from a previously planned news conference Thursday afternoon (10 a.m. EST).
Meanwhile, Arafat's top aides denied there had been any setback and accused Israel of spreading rumors. The report first aired on Israel's Channel Two television.
"These unfounded reports are not coming from French medical teams. These are leaks from the Israeli side," said Mohammed Dahlan, a former Palestinian security chief.
"Leaking such rumors will only complicate things and also complicate the situation within the Palestinian public," he told reporters in Paris.
Haled Salem, Arafat's top aide, said early Thursday that the medical analysis was "deepening a little bit" but he remained confident Arafat would recover. "There are no setbacks."
Arafat, who has been ill for three weeks, was flown to the French military hospital on Friday after passing out briefly at his West Bank headquarters in Ramallah (search).
He was initially said to be suffering a bad case of flu, with symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea. Doctors later found so-far-unexplained blood and digestive abnormalities.
Palestinian officials insist publicly that leukemia or any other form of cancer, as well as any type of poisoning, had been ruled out.
Undoubtedly conscious of the anxiety at home about the possible death of Arafat, who has led the Palestinians for 40 years without grooming an obvious successor, Palestinian aides had previously said he was improving and undergoing further tests.
In Israel, speculation has ranged from a viral infection to stomach cancer.
His brother, Fathi Arafat, is hospitalized in Cairo, Egypt, with an advanced stomach cancer, according to doctors there.
On Wednesday, Shahid said Arafat felt well enough to ask about the U.S. presidential election. An aide later issued a statement in Arafat's name congratulating President Bush on his re-election.
Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom (search) said Israel is tracking Arafat's health "very carefully.
"Our goal is to prepare for the day after, if and when he dies," he told Israel Radio.
Israeli intelligence was widely criticized after it was caught off guard last week by the sudden deterioration in Arafat's health.
Shalom said Arafat's condition "is very serious," but gave no details. At the same time, he said, "it is too soon to eulogize Yasser Arafat."

I think he's either going to die pretty soon, or if he does recover then he'll be in no state to rule again. I wonder what this will mean? Will a nutter fundamental come into power, or will it be a more liberal person? It could affect the worlds future.

Hmm sounds like my thoughts about the American Election, similiar Candidate backgrounds and it affects the World
Yeh I reckon the power will "officially" be with some Moderate respectable Palestinian Politician, however the real wielders of Power will be the Radical Hamas Militant Leaders.

It currently appears Arafat is near, or already, dead. Rumours were he had died, but his personal doctor has officially confirmed he is not; yet his condition has gotten even worse. More info is expected soon.

Well, I think there will very soon be someone who is as weird as him, or worse, to lead the country. Or whatever there's left of it.

I personnaly think Arafat died a few days ago. They're just trying to keep it quite for a few days so they can figure out who will replace him. They're already arguing where rafat will be buried.
It would be the first time a death of a political figure is kept quite for diplomatic reasons.

I wonder what his death will do to the political situation in the region? Do you guys think that it will destabilize further, or get better??

Well, I think there will be someone in his place, of course. I don't know who, and I don't know much about the people who he worked with but.. I don't think that the situation will suddenly amazingly approve or something. This war is going on for 2000 years, it isn't gonna stop or change much just because he dies.

I was not really talking about a drastic change, so much as a movement one way or the other. I wish I understood the politics of the region better, so that I could speak on the subject with authority. But I don't.

It all depends on who gets into power after. Some people will basically cause the situation to explode probably, but it could be made better a small bit if another type of person gets in. The problem is that the second option probably won't be the case, as the hardline groups wouldn't let a very soft person into power.

I saw a press conference with Bush two days ago. A reporter said "As im sure you know President Bush, Yasser Arafat has passed away." I thought he already died and it was known..... Maybe that reporter made an early assumption?
If he is dead, may he rest in peace. If he isn't but is dieing. I pray he dies with as little pain possible. I don't have anything against him.

He has not died. That was an assumption made by the Israelis. However, he is in critical condition in a coma...I have much against him, though, but I do hope that he may RIP.

A Rare Blood Disorder, last time I heard. Although being confined to a Compound with the constant threat of death for the past 2 years can't really help anyone's Health especially since he is 75 now.

Let's address the issue on where he should be buried, when/if he dies.
I think Jerusalem, quite obviously. It's the Palestinians Holy City, too, not just the Israelis.

Al-Aqsa in Al-Qudds (The Area known as the Temple Mount by Jews, in Jerusalem) where he requested. After all East Jerusalem where Al-Aqsa is, is legally meant to be Palestinian even according to the UN Mandate that divided the Land for Israel and Palestine back in 1948.

According to an Israeli news website he opened his eyes today, but the Palestinians say he's still in a Coma.

I don't give two sh*ts about what the Israelis want to be honest, if the Palestinians are willing to accept an Israeli Presence in East Jerusalem, the Land given to them in the UN Mandate then the Israelis should be willing to allow Arafat to buried in a Gravesite in Jerusalem.

I agree. I hate the way the Israelis treat those people. In death we all are no longer enemies. Let the man be buried where he wants. Honor that at least.
Especially since Pah said that its their land anyways from the UN.
