Well this is my opinion only, If anyone knows that mine is wrong plz say so.
Ok so a UT is embedded into your ear right.
So what I think is that it doens not translate as such but enables the hearer to understand what is being said by alterating the neurolitic pulses running from the ear to the brain to make it sound like English. But I don't know.

It's written in the script. That's what it is.

Well, I think it's *supposed* to be a neural (brain) implant.
Not too sure though.
But ultimately, it doesn't need an explanation, since, well, it IS a TV show.

I know we've discussed this before, but how the hell do the characters understand each other, when they don't have commbadges? I think they have the translators implanted.

That's a glitch in the episodes, I think..

I know that it is imbedded in some species. Like Ferengi have it in their ears. I don't know about Starfleet, though.

universal translator
Episode: TOS 031 - Metamorphosis
Device for translation of spoken languages in real-time communication. It operates by scanning brain-wave frequencies and using the results to create a basis for translation.
Captain Kirk used a handheld translator to communicate with the Companion in 2267.
The computers of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D have translator capabilities built into its system software.
This is what I got from STARTREK.com

So what about episodes like when Janeway is a prisoner of the Mok'ra Order? I'm just naming an episode that was on today, I don't remember the name. A senile old man mistook Janeway for his lost daughter in the episode. I'm pretty sure she didn't have a commbadge most of the time, nor was she on Voyager.

And that's not all. How come Worf can speak Klingonish Klingon and people with combadges(!) ask him what he just said? It's like the device precisely knows when to translate and when not.

I think that we can file Avani's example under the same file as the "Door Phenomenon". Every door on a Star Trek series knows exactly when to open, and if in fact the person near the door wants the door to open.
Picard> ::walks toward the exit of the Observation Lounge::
Door> ::senses that Picard isn't going to leave yet and stays shut::
Picard> ::turns around and makes a witty comment::
Door> ::opens as Picard turns to exit::
Door> ::thinks to itself, "I know you so well, Jean-Luc"::

and, even the alien species that haven't even heard of english, like the Kazon, speak english, you can read their lips and find out their saying exactly what you hear. So either the UT also alters what the Starfleet personell see and hear, or theres a error in the script

Remember the episode where they find Amelia Areheart (sp?) and they also had a Japanese guy and he says "Hey you all speak Japanese!" in shock.
Cant remember but it had something to do with the UT in that EP.

If you guys would watch SF other than ST, you'd realize that ALL SPACE ALIENS SPEAK 20th CENTURY AMERICAN ENGLISH.

most aliens are smart enough too learn it when they hear it. (like the ashgard from stargate.) However, a lot of aliens don't speak english at all (the xindi insectiods, wookies from star wars, the bugs from starship troopers, the aliens from Independence day.)

It'd just be to difficult and expensive to let them all speak another language. you'll have to think of one yourself

you can let them speak another language. They can translate it in subtitles. but then the Humans in the series wouldn't know what they where saying, that why they have a universal translator that translates as they speak. with most species it works.
