GOP voter drive accused of fraud in Ore., other states

In numerous battleground states across the country, including Oregon, a consulting firm funded by the Republican National Committee has been accused of deceiving would-be voters and destroying Democratic voter registration cards.

Canvasser Mike Johnson (left) reaches into his bag to pull out voter registration forms.

Arizona-based Sproul & Associates is under investigation in Oregon and Nevada over claims that canvassers hired by the company were instructed to register only Republicans and to get rid of registration forms completed by Democrats.

A KGW report earlier this month first uncovered that paid canvassers in Portland may have destroyed voter registration forms, prompting the Oregon probe.

"We treat these complaints very seriously," said Oregon Secretary of State Bill Bradbury. The Democratic office-holder said additional complaints were filed with election officials throughout the state. He declined to provide more details about his continuing investigation.

On Oct. 12, KGW interviewed Mike Johnson, 20, a canvasser collecting signatures in downtown Portland, who said he was instructed by his employer to only accept Republican registration forms. He told a KGW reporter that he "might" destroy forms turned in by Democrats since he was being paid by the Republican Party.

"I have never in my five years as secretary of state ever seen an allegation like the one that came up tonight -- ever," Bradbury said at the time the KGW report aired. "I mean, frankly, it just totally offends me that someone would take someone else's registration and throw it out."

Nathan Sproul, a former head of Arizona's Republican Party and the state's Christian Coalition branch, denies any wrongdoing and accuses Democrats of making things up.

"This is all about making accusations," Sproul said Friday. "They allege fraud where none exists and get the media to cover it."

Republican National Committee spokeswoman Heather Layman responded that her party accepts all voters, and she accused the Democratic Party of operating under this mandate: "If no sign of voter fraud exists, make it up, manipulate the media into covering baseless charges and spread fear."

Sproul declined to name the states in which his company conducted registration drives. His political consulting firm was founded last year and has received nearly $500,000 from the RNC since July, according to federal election records.

Former canvassers such as have come forward in Minnesota, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Oregon in the past two weeks alleging they were told to register only Republicans and to "walk away" from people who said they intended to vote for Democrat John Kerry.

Some said Democratic registration forms had been thrown out or ripped up.

It is illegal to tamper with voter registration cards, which are numbered and issued by local election officials. In some states, including Oregon, such acts are felonies.

In Nevada, Eric Russell of Las Vegas told The Associated Press that he watched a Sproul supervisor tear up eight to 10 registration forms completed by Democrats and managed to grab some of the shredded documents as evidence. State officials are investigating his claim.

Russell said that Voters Outreach of America, the name under which Sproul employees operated in Nevada and other states, owes him hundreds of dollars for registering residents but refuses to pay him.

Sproul called Russell simply a disgruntled employee.

Prompted by Russell's accusations, Nevada Democrats unsuccessfully went to court last week to try to persuade a state judge to reopen voter registration in their county, which encompasses Las Vegas.

In West Virginia, Lisa Bragg said she refused a sorely needed $9-an-hour job to register voters after attending an orientation session conducted by Sproul employees.

She said canvassers were discouraged from registering Democrats and were told to misrepresent themselves as poll takers.

Bragg, who filed a complaint earlier this week with the West Virginia secretary of state's office, said Friday that canvassers were given a script that read at the bottom, "Our goal is to register Republicans."

She called the registration drive dishonest, adding, "I believe everyone has the right to vote. Even though I'm a Democrat, I would have registered Republicans to vote."

In Minnesota, substitute teacher Adam Banse wanted a summer job with flexible hours. So he signed up with Sproul to knock on doors in suburban Minneapolis and register people to vote.

He quit after two hours. "They said if you bring back a bunch of Democratic cards, you'll be fired," Banse contends. "At that point, I said, `Whoa. Something's wrong here.'"

In Pennsylvania, Democrats in the state House of Representatives have asked the attorney general to investigate complaints from former Sproul canvassers who said they had been instructed to not register Democrats. About 40 to 50 also complained they had not been promptly paid.

Pittsburgh library patrons protested that Sproul employees were pressuring people to register as Republicans at tables set up outside a Carnegie Library branch.

A similar incident was also reported in southern Oregon in September, when the manager of Medford library headquarters refused a Sproul request to register voters after learning the firm was affiliated with Republicans.

IMO the repubs are doing whatever possible to keep their monke...... President in office it's quite sad actually. Just proves how desperate they are.

Well, I've got a few things to say:
1) That is HORRIBLE what that man is doing, and he needs to be prosecuted to the FULL EXTENT of the law.
2) If ANYONE is desperate, it's the DEMOCRATS! THEY are doing the big things, it's them who's the major group. For instance, even if Bush is the clear winner, they have lawyers who are going to accuse of voter fraud, they are registering people who shouldn't be registered, etc. WORSE THAN THE DEMS, or not necessarily WORSE, persay, but MUCH for often than the Republs.. However, the Republicans are doing their share, even though it's definitely less. But the stuff in Oregon is really the only state with Repub actions.

Democrats would rather settle elections in courts than in polling booths. That's a fact.

Florida was a sham last year. A complete sham. Why Bush didn't win by at least a thousand is beyond me.

500+ military votes in Florida weren't counted because of a late postmaster general somewhere overseas.
Military votes are typically 70-80% republican, so that's at least 250+ votes for Bush.

About 1000 voters in New York also, illegally, voted in Florida, and an estimated 800 of them were Democrats.

Democratic campaigners went around Miami picking up homeless people, buying them a lunch, and bringing them to a voting booth, in exchange for their vote, which is downright cheating.

As well as the fact that EVERY time they recounted, they found more and MORE votes for Bush.

The Liberal mindset baffles me.

1. Yes, Republicans are doing wrong here.
2. I am NOT "trying to make the democrats look bad." I am speaking the TRUTH!

I can ignore the one man messing things up, but when the entire opposing party tries to steal the election, in similar devious ways, I see problems.

I don't know if that's true. Is it? because the African-American accusations aren't true about the Repubs. I don't think you should go around making that accusation without actual proof.

I've SEEN it on TV. (Pertaining to the Democrat's latest ones) However, the one in 2000 was lies, as is this one.

I don't know if that's true. Is it?

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=15606

"dozens -- and perhaps thousands -- of military members have complained that they either never received requested absentee ballots or those ballots were delayed -- sent by slower fourth-class mail instead of first-class mail -- or have been lost after the service members sent them back in."

"A Marine officer who is aboard the USS Tarawa said he also has not received a ballot. Worse, after taking an informal "poll" in his sector, he found that 13 others had sent in ballot requests but only six had received them."

And this is only one example of the mystery that surrounds military ballots in Florida in 2000. I can only imagine how many more there are.
