Kerry hits Bush response to 9/11 attack news
'I would have attended to it'

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry said Thursday he would have handled news of the al Qaeda attacks on New York and Washington differently than did President Bush.

Bush was told of the suicide hijackings while he was in a Florida school classroom.

"Had I been reading to children and had my top aide whispered in my ear, 'America is under attack,' I would have told those kids very politely and nicely that the president of the United States had something that he needed to attend to -- and I would have attended to it," Kerry told the Unity conference of minority journalists in response to a question about what he would done.

Bush-Cheney spokesman Steve Schmidt had this reaction to Kerry's comment: "The indecision John Kerry has shown on the war on terror is reflected in his incoherent explanations on his vote against funding for the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and his inability to take a stand on whether or not he thinks the removal of Saddam Hussein was the right decision.

"These flailing attacks against the president are the result of a candidate who doesn't know what he stands for."

Getting the news in Florida
The independent commission investigating the attacks found that Bush waited five to seven minutes after White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card told him that a second hijacked jetliner had hit the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. (9/11 panel report: 'We must act')

The president then excused himself from the classroom of a group of elementary schoolchildren in Sarasota, Florida.

Footage of a visibly shaken president continuing to read along with the students after being told of the attack is featured prominently in the anti-Bush documentary "Fahrenheit 9/11." (Film sets new documentary mark)

But Bush told the 9/11 commission that his instinct was to project calm, "not to have the country see an excited reaction at a moment of crisis," the commission reported last month.

Bush is scheduled to address the same forum, the Unity 2004 conference, on Friday.

There was no immediate response to Kerry's comments from his re-election campaign.

CNN's Dana Bash contributed to this report.

Oh yeah what the hell was Kerry going to do? When you have four planes hijacked by terrorists, and all NORAD, NEADS, and everyone else who is supposed to take care of this in complete choas what was he supposed to do? How would Mr. Kerry have handled it different, got up and left the kids and reached Air Force One several minutes earlier than Bush?

He would have "attended" to it? Oh well then I guess that would have helped oh so much Mr. Kerry, if only you could have been there to "attend to it" then everything would be alright. That attack was dispicable, and I cannot beleive that anyone could have the nerve to complain about how President Bush handled 9/11, they have no clue what was going through his mind.

Agreed. There's not much that he could have done.

So he would get the kids nervious and scared, then? You don't just LEAVE in the middle of reading a story, or else fear would engulf the young kids.
And I otherwise agree with EVERYTHING Janeway just said.

How on Earth would the kids suddenly become frightened? He's reading a story for crying out loud. When he stopped they'd probably just wonder why.

I agree that the kids wouldn't have done much if he had left. Funny isn't it? The Deomcrats wanted Bush to jump around flailing and saying "we're all gonna die!", instead of remain calm and fearless in the hour of crisis. Im counting down the days till Kerry is the President.

Obviously he would have been flown to the planes and rescued the people single handedly. It is stupid to think that the president could have done something to help by the time that had happened. Maybe before (but thats another argument) but not once the hijackers had taken over the planes. I doubt the kids would have been really scared but there was nothing Bush could have done at that point so he might as well have kept going.

Sure, but Kyre, are you kidding! I just asked a 7-year-old second grade girl that I babysit this question, "If the President of the United States was reading a story to your class and then said 'I'm sorry, but I have something very important to do right now' after one of his people whispered something to him, would you be scared?" And she replied bluntly, "Yes." You see--kids DO get scared, and wasn't that a Kindergarten class? This is a 2nd grader. 5th and above--MAYBE 4th wouldn't be scared, but younger...
