Quote: | Oregon Ponders New Pot Law
Saturday, July 10, 2004
PORTLAND, Ore. An Oregon ballot measure expected to qualify this week would make it legal for medical marijuana (search) users to possess one pound of pot, create state dispensaries and allow nurse practitioners and naturopaths (search) to prescribe it.
If passed, a patient could possess six pounds of marijuana legally spread out, it would be enough to fill two grocery carts. The medical marijuana law on the books there now limits legal possession to three ounces.
Backers of the initiative say the current law isn't working for many of the 9,000 cardholders because they're running out of cannabis (search) before they can line up a new supply.
Opponents of the measures which include the Bush administration argue that these initiatives are less about helping sick people than about legalizing marijuana, especially since only 7 percent of the cardholders in the state are suffering from cancer (search), glaucoma (search) or AIDS (search). And many in law enforcement say it would create a financial incentive for government to get people hooked on what they insist is a gateway drug.
Eight states currently have medical marijuana laws. If Oregon voters pass the initiative, it would be, by far, the most liberal pot law in the United States.

Carry six pounds of pot!!!! What the hell does anyone need 6 pounds of pot for?!?!?! Tsss, it doesn't even have to be a certified doctor! A "naturopath"??? That could be some Indian medicene man or something. I really have no idea what anyone would legally do with two shopping carts full of pot.

Yes...running out...
Oh man though...I know a guy who has medical marijuana for his MS, and he gets it. But then he gets addicted, and smokes more than he has to. So then he grows marijuana in his basement. Really dumb, and thats why the law should be voted down! Completely!

Now, now. Let us not diss naturopathic doctors. A majority of them are much like your typical doctor, but use vitamins and minerals as cures. They're quite qualified.
Aside from this.
I definitely don't agree with what's being proposed...in north Cali, where I am, they're considering it, as well. Like people've said, there's already enough of it...heck, if they need it that bad, they could find the stuff.

I used to be in favor of legalization, but after seeing how pot broke up my group of friends, and created great divides, I don't know anymore. People act different on Pot. I've been around both drunk people and people who are high, i'd take the drunk guy any day. I can't stand being around pot users, they act like complete idiots and @$$holes on that stuff.
I'm definately in favor of medicinal pot. If we perscribe oxycots, morphine, ect... (which are much more addicting/intoxicating than pot) then there's no reason we shouldn't have medicial pot.

I still feel that Pot is way too addictive. I think this new law for my state is completely un-necessary. Why does Oregon have to be set alone from everything? Medical Marijuana, Gay Marriage, Assisted Suicide, Pumping Your Own Gas, we are different than the rest of the US on everything!

I agree with Pot being legal for medicinal purposes, but only enough to take away the pain. My mum's used it for the pain (she has ME), and it's the only thing that really works. She doesn't smoke it to get stoned, and hasn't become addicted to it. I don't agree with the amounts, but it should be legal for certain purposes only.
(Here it's illegal still, although it's recently been downclassified to a class C drug.)

dosent smoke it to get stoned so she's not addicted to it? that makes absolutly no sence and as far as the addictive thing, sex is more addictive than pot

From my personal experience, that's not the case.
It terms of people getting out of control at a bar or somthing I agree with you, drunks are much more violent to strangers and can be very reckless, but when you're like hanging out with friends in a small group, i'd much rather prefer a drunk over a pothead. I've been clean my whole life, maybe that's why I don't understand, but i've gotten to the point where if Pot comes out, I leave.
I don't have any qualms with anyone doing it, so long as i'm not forced to be around them.
As for the addictivity, I compare it to gambling. It's very hard to develop a physical addiction to it (unlike oxycots and morphine), but extremely easy to get mentally addicted to. Anything that makes you feel good can easily mentally addict you, and depending on your strength of will, and your ability to break habits, it can be addicting.

Make it legal for medical purposes, I can agree with that. However, make sure the patient gets it prescribed to them by a DOCTOR, with a degree, and that is government approved.

I disagree even with medical purposes, just an excuse to get high. My sister tried to get off as some dr. prescription. Reason is she just wanted to get high. That's just my opinion.

I don't see a problem with it, for medical reasons. I mean, if the person's in that much pain, then they should be allowed to have someway to relieve it. 6 pounds is definitely too much, but I don't see a problem with a more.... conservative amount.
