Well, that works up until we've got several pages of captions unrelated to the current image.
I can see why he wouldn't want a seperate thread for each contest, but perhaps something along the lines of one thread per 3/4 contests, to keep the confusion level low. I'll ask him about it.
Plus, it would be nice to keep the older winning captions visible somewhere.
