what is the episode when enterprise gets phase cannons?

They first used them in a episode called "Silent Enemy". Enterprise was dealing with a unknown alien threat and devoloped the phase cannons to defend themselves. The crew never found out who the aliens where..and they dont look like any aliens I have seen on ST b4.

I think the episode was mainly an excuse to show off that Enterprise did actually have guns as well as torpedoes. And to demonstrate the impressive special effects.
The aliens haven't been seen since and the story wasn't up to much either in that episode. Set the trend for many of the episodes to come

I have no idea, but the alien ship sure looked like a Romulan Warbird.

In the episode where the NX-01 is running from some aliens with a "naughty" Vulcan ambassador (Season 1) look at the ships which are chasing and you'll notice that they are the top sections of Romulan Warbirds with the noses chopped off
