Thu Mar 18, 2004 7:07 pm ENT fans complaining about the show not being on DVD |
|
Over on some Trek sites, I've heard complaints about Enterprise not being on DVD. I've heard people talk about organizing petitions and all that.
I think they have to realize that ENT on DVD is just a matter of time. When, not if!
Paramount has basically two choices. They can rush all the shows and movies out onto DVD, with no time or creativity put into them and leave fans with badly-rushed and bare bones DVD's.
Or, they can take their time with each show and give the fans something to be proud of.
They've done TNG and DSN (some would argue that TNG and DSN were released too close to each other). This year, we'll see VOY on DVD. I think it comes to the UK in May and the final season will be released in January 2005. The extras sound great and Paramount seem to be putting effort into it.
Paramount are also using 2004 to concentrate on releasing the big-screen Trek adventures. First time round, they released them as bare bones discs. Every film will probably get the 'Special Edition' treatment which is good.
I think 3005 (or maybe late 2004) will see TOS on DVD. After that, I think ENT's time will have come. And maybe the underrated animated series too.
So, I think ENT fans (I am one) should be a little more patient.
I've also heard ENT fans complaining that the VHS releases have been discontinued. Season 1 was released and that was that.
Now, if you don't own a DVD player, then news like that is quite hard. But, more and more people own DVD players. And the prices are coming down more and more.
Besides, the ENT VHS tapes only had two episodes per tape, not exactly great value for money when compared to DVD boxsets. Boxsets are the way of the future. Not many people now, for any show, want to collect VHS's with two episodes per tape and no extras. People would rather have full season boxsets to watch when they want and as often as they want.
ENT will come to DVD. If we be patient. I think 2005 will be a good year for ENT fans.

I agree. All Star Trek series will eventually come out on DVD. Just a matter of time...

I hope they release the animated series from the 70's as well. They were good episodes, true to the spirit of TOS. Some of the stories were continuations of TOS episodes and it was all great fun.
If they're not going to be released, I'd at least like to see them as extras on another Trek DVD.

There is no reason that a DVD set cannot be released after each season. This is commonplace now with many TV series.

That is a valid point but my feelings on this are that studios should not always be so quick to rush out boxsets after a season has finished. Often, we get poorly-packaged and rushed boxsets with disappointing extras. I'd rather Paramount took their time.
It's a busy year for Trek. VOY, the movies and perhaps TOS as well. I don't think they could adequately do justice to ENT if they were to release season 1 and 2. After all, it's not just Trek they're doing. They've other shows as well; there are rumours of a J.A.G. boxset for season 1.
I'd rather, and it's just my opinion, that Paramount waited until they'd released VOY and TOS before concentrating their energy and resources on ENT. I sometimes think a studio can have it's fingers in too many pies.

Paramount is a huge corporation. There's plently of resources to release a DVD set after each season. That should not be a concern.

Star Trek Enterprise also has a very narrow fan base compared to more mainstream popular TV shows on. Which means less staff at paramount devoted to the dvd publishing for Star Trek.

You're right, they are. But there are so many things we fans don't consider.
For example, extra features on DVD. It's not just a case of obtaining them and putting them on DVD's, there are several legal hurdles to face. Copyright issues and all that. It is a far more complex procedure than VHS. Yes, they do have the resources but like I said, whatever their resources, it is best not to rush things.
And besides, too many Trek shows released at once would be a nightmare. For both the fans wallets and DVD distributors. By 2005, I am sure we'll see the first season of ENT released. Depending on how the show does now. It's future is still a little up in the air. I hope it succeeds but there is unfortunately always the chance that a show will be cancelled. No show is ever completely safe. Just look at Angel.
