Three Leicester City players were today remanded in custody while investigations over an alleged sex attack continue.

Those detained in jail this afternoon were Keith Gillespie, Paul Dickov and Frank Sinclair.

Three other players - Matt Elliott, Lilian Nalis and James Scowcroft - were given "provisional liberty" by an investigating judge in the Spanish city of Cartagena.

The decisions came after a second day of private hearings in which a judge questioned the players in connection with allegations that three women were sexually assaulted in a hotel room in the plush resort of La Manga.

The players "vigorously contest" the allegations, said Leicester City in a statement. The club said it was treating the situation with "the utmost seriousness" and would be launching its own investigation.

"We have spoken with our players and they wish to make it clear that they will vigorously contest all charges and allegations made against them," the club said.

Two other players, Nikos Dabizas and Danny Coyne, have already been "provisionally released" following yesterday's hearings.

A ninth player, Steffen Freund, who had also been arrested, had earlier been released from the court without charge.

Four of the Leicester City players - Nalis, Dickov, Scowcroft and Sinclair - have been questioned over allegations of sexual assault and breaking and entering. Gillespie was questioned over assault and breaking and entering, while Dabizas, Coyne and Elliot were all questioned over accusations of breaking and entering and failing to assist the women. Freund had been quizzed over failing to offer assistance to the victim of a crime, an offence under Spanish law.

The club said the provisional release of Dabizas and Coyne meant neither would face the original allegations made against them. Outside court last night, Mr Davies said: "It has come as a tremendous shock to all our players. They are vigorously denying everything."

Club manager Micky Adams said he was "devastated" by the allegations. None of the players have been charged with any offence. Under Spanish law it is for the judge to decide whether to proceed with charges.

The relegation-threatened club had travelled to the sports centre at La Manga, on Spain's south-east coast, for relaxation, training and what has been described as a "bonding session".

According to police, the sequence of events which led to the allegations started on Sunday night, the day the squad flew to Spain. Staff at the Hotel Los Belones in La Manga say some of the players were drunk and argued with other guests.

Three African women tourists allege that later, the players burst into their hotel room.

They say four of the players sexually assaulted them and four others had broken into the room and failed to try to stop their colleagues.

The women made their allegations on Tuesday at Alicante airport as they were preparing to fly home, but were persuaded by police to remain in Spain to help the inquiry. The Spanish authorities say doctors at Alicante general hospital found marks on the women's bodies.

Police said the alleged victims handed them a wristwatch, which they claimed had been pulled from the wrist of one of the players, and some bloodstained pants.

The women were taken to police headquarters in Cartagena where police say they identified the accused from photographs, and made allegations against each of them.
