deuterium.
(D, 2H)
An isotope of hydrogen that contains one neutron and one proton in its nucleus.
You're average hydrogen molecule contains NO neutron, but deuterium has a neutron. So its just hydrogen with a neutron

Thats pretty cool I never thoghjt of that before but know that I know what it is made up of thats cool. And if you can find those things on Earth howcome they had to go to space to get them when infact all that they had to do was mine the stuff on Earth.

I believe that this is also the substance called 'heavy hydrogen.' It's the type of hydrogen used to make modern hydrogen bombs. Here's how it works:
-They coat the fission warhead in a layer of deuterium.
-When the fission warhead explodes it creates heat so intense that for a few moments the deuterium achieves the state of matter called plasma (usually only found inside stars)
-The deuterium, now in a plasma state, combine in a fusion reaction to produce helium and energy is released
So the H-bomb is like 2 bombs going off at once, once fission and one fusion.
I imagine it(deuterium) would work similarly on a starship. It's probably the reactive component of warp plasma.
Comments/corrections welcome!

Actually, deuterium is combined with tritium (hydrogen with 2 neutrons). Both are gases, and are placed at the center of the fissionable core.
The advantage is that much less fissionable material is required.

Plasma only found in stars eh? Do I have a star in my TV?! Plasma is ionised gas and is everywhere. An ionised hydrogen atom is a proton and in a warp core it reacts with anti hydrogen plasma (a negative proton) and the result is an release of energy 99.999999 so on% efficiency (all you get left, is a few neutrinos apparently). It is that powerful, that for a manned return trip to mars using todays technology would require about 5 grams of the stuff. I remember reading that that TOS enterprise used 60g/sec! The problem is this anti matter doesnt come in tins at your local tesco's. Which begs the question:since energy is neither created or destroyed, how do the Trek universe get their anti matter?

i'm no dummy! i knew that before i read the forum!!!
i think antimatter is manufactured by changing the state of something in the particles, we do it today, just its less then 1,000,000,000 of a gram per year nowerdays, they must have a safer, more effecient way!

They also use (and nowadays probably mainly) use this principle in nuclear fusion reactors. It's the same way the sun "makes" its energy. The current fusion reactors use more power than they deliver however. But if they could make the reactors more efficient they would deliver more power than standard nuclear reactors without the chance of a meltdown! The solution for the world's energy problem, it is indeed.

Actually, at least one tokamak has has acheived over-unity output. The problem now is to sustain the recation. The longest durations are currently on the order of 200 seconds. Check out www.focusfusion.org.

Deuterium is only half of the fuel fuel, it is the 'matter' in the matter/Anti-Matter reactoin in the warp core.

yeah
the other half is anti hydrogen
