if I remember right I think I heard somewhere not sure though that they wanted him because he had a betles look about him but than again I could be wrong

I heard that Checkov's look was inspired by 'The Monkees,' an ultra-popular TV pop band at the time.
I've got an interview with George Takai from when they showed the remastered TOS episodes on the sci-fi channel- he talks about how he hated Walter Keoning 'sight-unseen' for taking his place on the bridge.
