Overdoing the cross-overs

Does anyone else think that the Trek books are overdoing these cross-overs? Call me old-fashioned but I think it's completely possible to intertwine stories from different series without releasing the books as a set. It's just another marketing ploy if you ask me.

I agree. It was novel when they had TOS cast in the pilot episode of TNG. And it was good when they carried it on throughout the series. And it was great when they went to DS9. But by the time of Generations it was getting a bit old. Sure it was good to see Kirk et al but the idea was...old.

...And so they decided to do it again (and again and again) in the books. Now I don't mind it if they tie in naturally as it sets a sense of continuity, eg. the crew of the Enterprise E in the DS9 Avatar series books working with the crew of DS9. I thought that was a good way of linking the books together, drawing in fans of the TNG series as well as DS9-ers.

What I don't like are the Kirk ones where they bring him back again and again simply because he is Kirk. And he has to go and work with Picard again. And again. There I was thinking he was dead when all of a sudden I hear that in Shatner's new book, Kirk is there fighting alongside Riker who is apparently Captain of the Titan. But he's dead! Isn't he? Mind you I haven't read all the other books so maybe somehow he was magically brought back.

It was good the first time round, novel in fact. But now it's nothing new, and I'm sure that many people expect such meetings to take place. It is annoying however when other authors disregard the work of their predecessors. For example, in the Dominion War series, Ro worked with Picard but in Avatar, it is written that she hasn't seen him since she left the Enterprise D to join the Maquis. Little things like that break the illusion for me.

It's not all the cross-continuity that annoys me, it's more of bringing the characters through time to meet characters of the past or future. Once or twice and it's cool but I think they've taken it too far.

I agree completely. Enterprise has great temptation to go down that path as well now. I hope they resist
