Quote:
COLUMBUS, Ohio (CNN) -- Two more shootings near a highway encircling Ohio's capital city have been linked to 12 other shootings in recent months, including one that left a woman dead, investigators said Friday.

Chief Deputy Steve Martin of the Franklin County Sheriff's Department said no one was injured in the latest incidents, which occurred Sunday and Monday.

But he also warned that the shooter or shooters are behaving in an "intentional" manner to cause harm on or near the city's perimeter highway .

"Anybody that would go out on a freeway and shoot at moving vehicles going 65 mph -- I don't consider that to be an accident. I think that's intentional because the possibility of someone getting hurt is real when you do something like that," Martin said.

"Apparently, the fact that Mrs. Knisley was killed doesn't make any difference" to the shooter, he added.

Gail Knisley, 62, was shot and killed November 25 as she rode in a car driven by a friend on Interstate 270.

Sunday, a woman driving near the southern section of I-270 heard a noise and found she had a flat tire, investigators said. No bullet was recovered in that incident, but the paint on the car was scratched.

And late Sunday or early Monday, a home bordering that highway in the city of Obetz was struck by a bullet. No one was in the residence at the time, Martin said.

The bullet recovered there was found to match the weapon that killed Knisley.

Martin said that ballistic evidence conclusively linked one of those shootings to four others, and said all 14 shootings are considered linked because of their location and circumstances.

Martin said authorities theorize that the shooter or shooters are familiar with the small city of Obetz, which lies just inside I-270 on Columbus' south side, and that they may live, work or drive through that area.

Many of the 14 incidents under investigation occurred near this area, including a shooting at a school November 11 that broke a window. No one was in the school at the time.

He also the "nature of crimes" indicates the person or persons involved are willing to risk being seen by the public.

"It is not uncommon for a person to brag or talk about their activity with someone they know or trust," Martin said, while asking the public again to call the tip line to report anyone who may have mentioned their involvement or any suspicious persons or vehicles seen in the shooting areas.

More than 1,050 leads have been called in to a tip line in the case, and a $10,000 reward has been offered for information.

The chief deputy also repeated his daily plea to the perpetrator to establish a communication with authorities by phone or mail.

Authorities Thursday issued tips to motorists, saying drivers should continue driving if they think their car has been hit, but should note the time and location of the incident.

They should also note suspicious people or cars in the area before they reach a safe place and can call 9-1-1.

When asked why authorities are not calling the perpetrator a sniper, Martin said investigators are "not prepared to make that jump."

"Because collectively we still don't believe we should call this individual a sniper because one, that denotes a military person in camouflage, hiding and shooting from long distances, and that may or may not be the issue," he explained.

Officials are also asking truckers on the highways near the southwestern corner of I-270, where most of the shootings have taken place, to keep their eyes and ears open if they notice anything suspicious.

A tip from a truck driver helped lead police to the two men arrested in the D.C.-area sniper case. (Latest on 2nd sniper suspect trial)
