Some Oregonians could be in for another day of snow mixed with rain starting late Thursday morning.

In Portland, expect "rain showers with maybe a few wet snowflakes but no accumulation," said KGW meteorologist Dave Salesky.

Snow showers and accumulation are more likely above 500 feet elevation, such as in the Oregon and Washington state coast ranges, he said.

"It's snowing heavily in the Cascades," Salesky said. He expects one and a half to two feet of snow to accumulate there today.

The temperature in downtown Portland wasn't far from freezing at just 37 degrees as of 8:30 a.m. The daytime high could reach 45 degrees, he said.

The western Columbia River Gorge, including the cities of Cascade Locks, Hood River and Stevenson have a winter storm warning in effect until 6 p.m., and a winter storm warning is in effect in the Cascades in Lane County and south Washington Cascades.

As many as five inches of snow has accumulated in areas above 500 feet on Wednesday. New snow accumulations of up to one inch are possible at lower elevations.

On Wednesday, the Portland metro area was hit by a surprise snowstorm.

A cold air mass that had been hovering over Alaska for the past few weeks moved almost due south down the coast and blew into the region. The storm brought swirling morning snow into downtown Portland, which was essentially snow-free last winter, but by mid-afternoon, the snow had melted and patches of blue sky appeared.

With temperatures holding steady at about freezing across the region, the cold front brought little damage or danger with it, but it did prompt a head start on the ski season on at least one mountain.

Ski officials on Mount Hood, encouraged by the snow storm, decided to open the mountain a day ahead of schedule.

"We are gearing up and getting ready to go," said Chris Huggett, marketing coordinator on Mount Hood, who said last year there was hardly any snow on the mountain in late November.

Officials at Mount Hood Meadows said it snowed hard on the mountain Wednesday, with about 25 inches of new snow so far.

The inclement weather caused a high concentration of power outages in West Linn, Oregon City and Milwaukie areas, as well as in eastern Multonomah County, said Scott Simms, a spokesman for Portland General Electric.

"In the higher elevations it's the weight of the snow on the branches and in the lower elevations the outages are due in large part to the loose soil and high winds blowing trees over or branches falling off," Simms said.

Schools throughout Multnomah, Clackamas, Yamhill, Marion, Polk, Linn, Benton and Lincoln counties were closed due to the weather. There were no flight delays or cancellations at Portland International Airport due to the weather, airport officials said.
