In celebration of the holiday season, KGW Northwest NewsChannel 8 officially kicks off its twenty-second annual Great Toy Drive in Portland on Friday, November 28.
On the morning of November 28th, NewsChannel 8 anchors Tracy Barry, Joe Donlon, Laural Porter and Chief meteorologist Matt Zaffino begin the four-week campaign to collect toys for deserving children with a shopping spree at Finnegan's Toys at 922 SW Yamhill and Toy Bliss in Pioneer Place in downtown Portland. That "dash for toys" will be seen Friday night on NewsChannel 8.
The cost of the shopping spree will be underwritten by Finnegan's Toys and Toy Bliss. During the spree, hundreds of toys will be collected, and will be the first to appear under the NewsChannel 8 holiday tree in the station's giant "toy box" in Studio A. In 2002, KGW's Great Toy Drive amassed over 55,000 toys, which were distributed to more than thirty-five agencies in NewsChannel 8's viewing area.
Once again, the primary drop-off points will be at over 75 Les Schwab Tire Centers in Oregon and southwest Washington and at any of the 116 Starbucks Coffee Company locations in Portland as well as KGW's studios at 1501 SW Jefferson Street, Portland. Donations will be accepted up until Friday, December 19th.
Included in this drive will be toy drop-off points at Lloyd Plaza (outside of Nordstrom) in NE Portland on Saturday, November 29th ; across from Wal-Mart on 82nd Ave. in SE Portland on Saturday on December 6th and at Cedar Crossing Shopping Center in Beaverton on Saturday, December 13th. All drop-offs will be conducted from 8 am to 7 pm.
All donations must be new, unwrapped toys. They will be collected by Les Schwab Tire Stores and delivered to KGW on Thursday, December 18th before being picked-up by over thirty-five local agencies on Friday, December 19th.
"The Great Toy Drive is one of the biggest events NewsChannel 8 conducts every year," said KGW President and General Manager Paul Fry. "After twenty-two years, the station remains committed to making sure every child has as happy a holiday season as possible."
"We're delighted to again be associated with NewsChannel 8's Great Toy Drive, specifically with the kick-off event," said Chuck Wagner, President of Toy Bliss. "It's a great Portland tradition, and we're thrilled that some Toy Bliss toys are going out to those in need, he added." |

Sounds a great thing to do, while helping a good cause and also getting them some great publicity (s.p?), as shown by them getting their name put up like this.
