KELSO, Wash. -- Almost as if it were a flashback from ten years ago, two freight trains collided south of Kelso Saturday morning, injuring crew members and scattering derailed cars across Interstate 5.
Unlike the scene from November of 1993, this time the accident wasn't fatal.
Around 8 a.m. Saturday morning, a northbound Union Pacific train apparently struck the rear of a southbound Burlington Northern Sanfa Fe train that was crossing from one set of tracks to another, according to Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman Gus Melonas.
Two crew members on the Union Pacific locomotive were trapped and then hospitalized after being freed.
One man was transported to Oregon Health Sciences University. The other was being evaluated at Saint John, according to a nursing supervisor at Saint John Medical Center.
Their injuries are not considered life-threatening, but both were listed in serious condition.
No one on the Santa Fe crew was hurt.
Three containers are leaking diesel, said Sandy Howard with the Washington state Department of Ecology. Officials believe the three containers were carrying a total of 7,150 gallons of diesel.
The state Department of Ecology sent two spill responders, and a crew with Cowlitz Clean Sweep are assessing damage and trying to keep fuel from making its way into the nearby Columbia River.
Burlington Northern Santa Fe, which owns the tracks, is investigating. It's not yet known how fast the trains were moving when they collided.
The Union Pacific train was headed from Portland to Seattle. It had three locomotives and 90 cars, 60 carrying garbage and 30 empty.
The BNSF train was headed from Seattle to Roosevelt, Washington. It had three locomotives and 32 containers of garbage.
Both train lines will be shut down for at least 24 hours.
Passengers on an Amtrak train stuck in Tacoma will be bussed to Portland. Amtrak will bus all other passengers between Seattle and Portland until the train lines reopen.
Five people were killed when a Burlington Northern and a Union Pacific train collided head-on in the same area a decade ago.
Sixty different lines share the tracks, according to Burlington Northern officials.
