Babylon 5 by far!
The reason why i think its better than most others is that its one big story, its like you know the characters after you've watched all 5 seasons. Ok DS9 is also like that but B5 has a certain feel to it that makes it better, things go deeper in the B5 storyline. Also the whole thing builds up to a big war with the shadows, so its part of something bigger also. More menacing than the borg.
Stargate SG1 is a great series, good action and some good stories but rather shallow when it comes to character development.
Startrek is classic obviously =)
As for Andromeda, ive never got into it, i think the characters are weak, especially Hercules guy lol.

Although Star Trek used to be the best, its degraded over time. Since the poll asks us to take Star Trek as a whole into account, I cannot rank it best.
Babylon 5 is the best, most epic series I've ever seen. I've voting for it.
However, Stargate SG-1 is also a superior series......its just a darned good show.
Andromeda had potential, but it threw it all out the window more than a season ago.

I've never seen babylon 5... is it good? I try watching stargate but i never know what the heck is happenning. More so for andromeda... those 2 are really hard to get into if u come in in the middle of the show. star trek has always been extremely easy to get into... x-files too. but those 2 still perplex me.

Babylon 5 is extremely epic, and as such its pretty much a requirement to see it in order. However, if you give it a chance, its *very* good. Season 1 is kind of lackluster; however, season 2 is a vast improvement and season 3 is amazing.
Stargate, while it does use some story arcs, is generally more standalone; while its possible to see individual episodes, it *really* helps to watch from the beginning. Preferably seeing the movie first.
You're in luck if you're interested and have the Scifi Channel. Babylon 5 will be running from the beginning, once every weekday, starting on Monday, September 15th. However, it will be on at 9AM, so you may want to set the VCR. The 15th and 16th will show parts 1 and 2 of "The Gathering", which was the pilot. However, I don't really think TG is very good.......especially since the series was overhauled and changed prior to season 1 (which begins on Wednesday the 17th). I suggest checking it out. Give it at least a season; if you're not hooked after the season 1 finale, then you can consider giving it up. Not before.
Also, Scifi runs "Stargate Monday", a four-hour block from 7pm to 11pm every Monday night of four back-to-back Stargate eps from seasons 1-5. Luckily for those who want to see it from the start, Stargate Monday will be cycling back to the pilot episode, "Children of the Gods", on October 6th. (There will also be an SG1 episode at 6pm that day, possibly the funniest ep of the series, but its from season 4 and is part of a different rotation.) While the version of CotG that Scifi will be showing is heavily cut (due to originally being made for the commercial-free Showtime), the story is still intact. While "Children of the Gods" does recap the relevant events of Stargate the movie, I'd still recommend seeing that first. Most of the actors are different and some of the backstory, but its still relevant to the series.
So, keep those dates in mind. B5 restarts on September 15th; SG1 on October 6th.

Have you been watching the same SG-1 that I've been watching? IMO character development is one of it's strongest features.

Not all fighting. Plenty of eps where not a shot is fired.
That said, there is a healthy quotient of ground battles, and even a few space conflicts.

I very much like SG-1. Got my Dad into it recently, too. We just watched six eps back to back to back to back.... you get the idea,

I've seen the stargate movie... i thot it was really dumb. I've seen the show quite a few times and I'm still confused a lot too... especially about those people who have the weird voices. They're supposed to be like... symbiots in the body of a human or something...? Or whatever the word is instead of symbiots... or however you spell it. Oh well... unfortunately I don't have the sci-fi channel. phooie. Oh well...

The movie is, IMO, watchable at best. Its OK, but not great.
I think the series is a vast improvement. If you've got a little extra money to spend, I've heard that Best Buy has a deal on the Stargate DVDs: $40 discount if you buy all four seasons currently on DVD. That would put it at about $160, just a little over the price of one and a half seasons of Star Trek. (Each SG1 season is around $50.)
Yeah, expensive, but worth it if you end up liking the show. That's 87 episodes for the same price you'd pay for about 35 episodes of Star Trek (any series). And since I believe season 6 is the only season currently in syndication (up until today it was only season 5), the only way to see it properly if you don't have Scifi is to buy or rent DVDs.
Alternatively, slightly more money ($179) would be enough to buy the first three seasons of Babylon 5 on DVD from www.northamericandvd.com . It used to be about $5 cheaper per set there, but the high sales volume prompted them to raise the price slightly. (This site also offers Stargate for about $10 less per season than Best Buy. If the BB deal is over, this is a cheaper source ($168).)
Of course, you may not want to pay money for a show which you might or might not like. I'd be hesitant about that too. I'm just showing you what's out there.

I've heard that opinion before, and I think I can understand it.
However, it does seem to be a minority viewpoint. For one thing, the series corrects several logical flaws in the movie, like moving the SGC from Creek Mountain (nonexistent) to Cheyenne Mountain (home of NORAD). Also, the DHDs explain how Daniel was able to dial the Abydos gate without a supercomputer----something the movie really didn't explain.
However, I'll grant that the movie's viewpoint was more interesting in some ways. For instance, the Gate dialing system was based on constellations in that; in the series, it works more like a phone number.

While I am enamored of the Star Trek series, I also Loved the Lexx movies, and the series wasn't too bad. Farscape was another great sci - fi show! I'll never understand why it was axed. Anyone else know?

It was expensive to produce. Scifi thought they could do just as well with a cheaper show; so far, that hasn't happened.

Too bad! Maybe they'll make a movie for the sci-fi channel so we could get some closure!

Its possible, but at the moment it doesn't look likely. If the Firefly movie (scheduled for 2005), which marks the return of another cancelled show, does exceptionally well at the box office, it will increase the chances of Farscape getting some closure.

Poor misguided Aaron,
The movie was ok, but the series is able to get far more in depth with the characters and the plots.
I did actually have something else to say, but it's slipped my mind... *sigh* Well, I'll edit later,
