PostSat Feb 21, 2004 8:56 pm    Reoccurring Characters

Why didnt ANY other star trek series manage to do this, from day one there was a whole host of secondairy characters that would be in almost every episode until the end of the series. They managed these characters so well that before a plot point would be established a character would be in a seemingly irrelivent episode (for example eddington in "our man bashir" which was 12 episodes before he resumed the maques story arc). they even managed to keep mourn in the series consistantly, even though he was just a background character to add to the idea of life on the station. voyager had like 800 different crewmembers wandering around the corridors which shouldent have happend. it dosent take much to make a series seem consistant and well thought out, unfortunately only DS9 has managed it in the star trek universe so far.

hell even Miles former history with the cardassian border wars was remembered.

YES! That is one of the reasons I enjoy DS9 so much, they had plenty of recurring characters, good ones as well. The basic fact that this series was set on a space station made the idea of having so many recurring characters work. I don't think it would have be the same for Voyager or TNG. For instance, on Voyager they would have been limited to only crew members and to be honest having 30 or so recurring crew members isn't even half as good as the recurring characters from DS9. The ones in DS9 were from many different races, they had many differing agendas and the potential for great storylines was fantastic. 30 or so crew members wouldn't even being to create so many good storylines imo.

If another series was made after Enterprise, having it set on a station of some sort like DS9 would be great.

Btw, Voyager had only 150 crew members .. but if you think about it I bet the total amount of extras they used as crew members was far more than that number by the end of the series.

Thats why i WISH they had a few dozen reoccuring crewmembers, so that when they shot yellow shirt of the week or somthing exploded on the ship and there was a random crewmember being carried into sickbay there would actually be value to how small and isolated the ship was.

like what happend to carey? or the maques crew? or any of the people that they mentioned in passing once or twice that never showed up again.

Yeah, I see what you mean. It's a shame they didn't go down this path and it doesn't seem like Enterprise has learnt from Voyager's mistakes either.

Carey was killed in the 7th series, in the episode Friendship One. So at least we know what happened to him, even though it was a sad ending to his character.

i had forgotten he died, but they could have mentioned him a few times other then season 1 and his death.

the enterprise-d has an excuse, it has 1000+ people on it, the NX and Voyager didnt have that excuse, in fact the NX has less of an excuse, its a smaller ship. i just hope they at least keep the small millitary commandos that are now on the ship the same every time they are used, that would just get really dumb really fast.

The station offered a setting unlike any on other Trek shows, all based on vessles. Voyager had a crew of just over 100, Enterprise has less than 100. DS9 had a station, a planet in Bajor, a Wormhole to another quadrent next door, and a Cardassian Empire as a neighbor. This allowed for the development of many characters beyond the classic senior staff crew from other Trek shows.

Yes, that's probably one of the best part of DS9. The relationships between the crew and reoccuring characters were well thought out! Good writing staff!
