Great overall. However, there are some *really* slow parts, particularly in the first half of "Fellowship". Once the story gets to Rivendell, things pick up a bit.
Also, the narrative frequently gets bogged down in excessive description of the scenery.

It's been a while since I read it but I agree with Lindley; parts of it are exceedingly slow, particularly the "Council of Elrond" section...however, once it picks up, it picks up.
Personally I'd take the books over the films any day...you know how when reading you visualise characters in different ways, well the characters portrayed in the movie(s) weren't the same as I imagined them to be...
Mind you generally speaking I prefer books to the films (excluding novelisations based on films)...the Jurassic Park books for example are hugely better than the films IMO.

Haven't seen the movie, then, huh? It does a pretty good job of telling the story----its a far better transferrance than most book-to-movies.
If you've read "The Hobbit", a far shorter, less epic, but also much easier-to-read book, Rivendell is mentioned in that as well.
Its an Elvish town. Before they get there, there's stops at Buckleberry and Brie, as well as a long and mostly pointless discursion in which they meet Tom Bombadil.

The Hobbit is set before Lord of the Rings...it details how Bilbo found the Ring in the first place and how he took it off Gollum on his way to stealing a dragon's treasure...- a character you'll meet later on in Lord of the Rings...

While not an essential part of the LOTR storyline, if you lose interest in Fellowship, I suggest trying "The Hobbit". Its a much easier read.
And of course, everyone should see the movies at some point, whether you've read the books or not.

I've seen both of the movies... I didn't really like them that much, I thought they dragged on. But I did only see the extended version of the first one.
As for the books, I've read The Hobbit, and I thought that was much more interesting than the films, but I have yet to move on to the LOTR books.

I know it's been only two days since I last posted here, but I borrowed the collection where all the books are in one novel, and am on page 123 of two towers, so I don't mind it, that is the part where pippin is decribing his/her(I never did figure that one out) problems with the orcs
