Well, I have never heard of anything above a type 12 phaser. The type 12 is the phaser used on starbases, and the sovereign class.

The Daystrom has a complete listing, and StarTrek.com has a semi-good listing.

Isn't it strange how the official star trek website often has misleading information?

Not really, they only post what they know without thinking. We use our brain to piece the information together.

It is in the star trek encyclopedia.

Type 1: Small handheld. See Star Trek and TNG first season.
Type 2: Larger handheld. See All Star Trek.(normal handheld in STV and DS9)
Type 3: Handheld phaser rifle.
Type 4: Medium sized emitter device. Mountable on ground-based vehicles and some shuttlecraft.(phaser cannon kind of)
Type 8: Ship mounted. All starships and starbases have these types.

These are the only phasers. They skip some numbers because they sound better.

Of course it goes into subclasses of phasers. Each phaser is different, and with each phaser, there are newer varieties. Improvements and such, so, thats where all the different numbers come from.
