PostSun Apr 13, 2003 5:41 pm    If you could have negative mass..

Would you technically be able to go faster than the speed of light?

Even if this were true there's the problem of NEGATIVE MASS.

Blah.

A negative mass! You off your trolley? If you had a negative mass, you'd be able to go infinite speed from no energy! Look, once the problem of how photons can travel at the speed of light is figured out, then we'll be able to too.

Hmmm, Negative Mass...never thought of that....interesting. Did you come up with this concept on your own (the whole theory, as in traveling faster than the speed of light with the negative mass) or did you read it out of a book? I am perplexed. Truly, an interesting theory. Could one exceed light speed with not only no mass, but negative mass. First of all, what would it be like, would you suck the mass in around you until you hit zero mass?

Oh, I was just thinking, but the whole problem behind it would be to GET negative mass, and if you think about it, it's quite impossible.

Negative mass? Impossible. You might be thinking of negative energy.

Yes, negative mass is Theoretically impossible. Of course, you never know, what with aliens and all

Negative energy, man, my science teachers suck! I must ask Mr. Straub about this. (See Post: Modified Cochrine Scale)

Have you guys noticed that whenever we get into space-time, or astrophysics, not many people get involved

Yep. It seems the majority of people cant expand their mind beyond 3 dimensions. Its all a piece of cake. No one knows for sure what its all about. Just make logical projections, and youre onto a winner!

Har har har! Negative mass, no such thing! Supposing gravity works the same way with negative mass as it does with regular mass.

If you are moving 200 miles a second in the direction of the Gravity field and suppose the max speed I think its called terminal velocity but I am not sure, is 200 miles a second then you would continue to go 200 miles a second.

Now suppose you are going 0 miles a second to the gravity field. And all the rules of before still apply. Then you would accelerate until you got until the terminal velocity which in this case would be 200 miles a second.

But that wouldn't mean you could go faster than light, and even if it did, there is currently to known physics, no source of negative mass.

Try looking in the area of quantum tunneling, they have gotten things to go faster than light supposedly the things go into other dimensions.

There would be no terminal velocity with a gravity field in space. If you had a negative mass you could go at any speed. Nothing will ever have a negative mass and only nothing has a mass of zero. So we can assume that where there isnt something, there is nothing because since nothing has a zero mass, it can travel at any speed it wants!!!

I see what you are saying now...

That if you could combine the negative mass with the regular mass, it would have less mass and therefore would take less energy to move, you could do this to a point that it would take litteraly 0 energy to move it therefore It could move at infinite speeds because normally it would require infinite energy but since it has 0 mass it doesn't take any energy.

I UNDERSTAND NOW

(I am in a semi-scientist mode right now)

Yeah, I can see negative mass as being a good thing now, but the problem is actually achieving it of course. I have seen possible theorys to travel faster than light, but I don't even think you could construct a theory on achieving negative mass. It is as far fetched as time travel.

Oh. I get it. Seems simple enough, if that is what he's saying.

I have never ever read in all my time such complete and utter 5h1t! Do you really know what you are going on about? A negative mass for a starters! And then adding it to a positive mass! If I wasnt laughing supremely hard right now, i'd be crying with pity.

1) Yes we do know what we're talking about.
2) Oh my god, it's so freakin obvious. Negative Mass. It exists! Yes, it does!

Strangley enough, photons brought up the particle-wave duality.

While traversing space, photons act as waves. A wave has no mass, therefore photons travel at the speed of light. Quantum physics treats all particles as wave functions.

When a photon strikes something, its wave function "collapses" and the photon "becomes" a particle. Photons actually do have mass (very tiny). This mass times the photon's wave function speed provides momentum (energy) which allows photons to affect electrons.

This is the basis of the photo-electric effect, which helped physicists begin to develop quantum physics.

According to quantun theory, a particle with negative mass not at complete rest would have negative energy (momentum = velocity * mass).

I made this post a while ago, when I was much more idiotic.

People, mass is a measure of the amount of matter in an object, regardless of gravity. 1 gram of hydrogen on Earth is 1 gram of hydrogen on the moon.

WEIGHT is affected by gravity, 1 pound of hydrogen on Earth might be 1/4 of a pound on the moon.

Gravity has nothing to do with mass, and mass can't be negative. It can be zero (a vaccuum; nothing is there) or it can be positive (something is there), but you can't have less that nothing in a vaccuum, that's absurd.

Remember the equation E=mC^2?

Tha fact that we haven't observed negative mass does not mean it couldn't exist.

According to the above equation, negative mass implies negative energy, and cosmologists are beginning to suspect such a thing does indeed exist.

It has recently been shown that the "cosmological constant" has changed over time, so keep an open mind.

nothing is really impossibe well with the exception of slaming a revolveing door

saying its impossible is just saying you lack the knowledge or the intiative

I admit that I am not understanding alot of this stuff right now but I am going to then I'll be able to out do my Physics teacher
