If the clever people in the Daystrom Institute (http://www.ditl.org/) know that mugh about warp, why can't they create it? I know it's a silly question but I think the answer is that we're not a figment of Gene Roddenberry's imagination.

Also, if and when "warp" drive is invented, do you think it will be christened warp, after Star Trek, or just warp because that's sort of what it does? It would be cool if a trekker found warp, and dilithium, and named them all after trek.

Well warp is called warp because it distorts the space around the ship to make it move. It 'warps' space itself if that makes any sence.

And Mr Kennedy from the ditl is more of a star trek fanatic rather than a scientist. I have read some very, very long articles a while ago explaining the possible ways of warp travel, but I forgot where I found them.

Does watching star trek not make you a scientist, in a warped kinda way (excuse the pun)?!? I kinda understood the bit about the actual warp of space, I just thought it might be cool if they really did call it warp, not something like dilithium photon power or something (I know photon energy is summat completely diff:P)

You are correct in mentioning about the warp drives warping space time, hence their name. The reason we cant create a warp drive is because you need whats known as a '*beep*' of energy. I have no idea how much, but i'd hazard a guess at the equivelent of 1 gigaton bomb/sec to get to warp 1 for Cochrans ship? Otherwise you only need, and this is no joke, a few metal plates.

LOL! I'm imagining a set of wheels on the back of the engines!
