Chapter 1
GZaal stared out the window, wincing at the bright glare of the sun as it penetrated his
sensitive eyes. He quickly looked away, remembering what had happened the last time he let his
curiosity get the best of him. As he turned his utmost attention back to the console before him, he
heard something emanating from the far end of the ship. His highly sensitive ears perked up,
listening attentively. But the sound had left as quickly as it had come. He slowly got up from his
chair, careful not to trip on the mess of conduits at his feet.
He took a few slow steps towards the area in which the sound had come from. The back
of his ship lay shrouded in an immense darkness, even with the suns rays pouring in. It sent a cold
shiver down the Darjessans spine when he thought about it. How could a warp vessel, which he
called his home, feel so empty and cold?
A few more steps he took, and that was when he heard the sound again. It was easier to
make out this time, though, now that he was looking for it. It seemed to be getting louder...closer.
He didn't recognize, at first, the sound that was coming towards him. It sounded like something
made of metal clanging against a metal surface. And yet it sounded completely different. Inside his
mind, a fury of questions churned themselves about like a hive of bees collecting honey for their
queen: What was that sound? Where was it coming from?.. What was creating it? He crept to the
very back of his cruiser, his curiosity getting best of him. For some reason, though, it was no
longer cold as it had been before. No. It was warmer back here. Had the environmental controls
been malfunctioning again?
The sound came again, this time lasting a few seconds more than the last one. He quickly
took out his phaser, setting it to stun.
Dok cheluk mahk? he called out. Whos back there? No response. A small bead of sweat
penetrated the scales of his hard, rigid face, either from the increased humidity or from his own
fear. He heard something again, this time, though, it was a different sound. It was the sound of
mechanical limbs of some sort moving about.
Tal chehook! he called out again. Answer me! He took a step into the vast shadows of the
ships depths, and dropped his phaser almost immediately. What he saw before him was something
not even a Darjessan could boast about defeating. Something that conjured up a black pit of fear
in the very depths of his soul. The wires protruding from its skull, its pale, white skin.
Technological devices protruding from its organs.
A Borg drone.
After a brief moment of disbelief and horror, he turned round and ran madly to the helm, where he
had been just moments before.
The drone followed him.
He scrambled frantically into the chair, pushing buttons furiously but to no avail.
The Borg got closer.
No matter how much he tried, he could not get the ship moving. While it would not do much help
since the drone was already on his ship, that thought hadnt crossed his mind. He was lost in a sea
of terror. And alas, before anything could be done, the cold, sharp piercing of his neck
commenced, assimilation tubules injecting nanoprobes into his body. He fell back as the tubules
withdrew themselves, moaning. Seconds afterwards, the nanoprobes surged through his body, and
implants began to form. Every last trace of individuality was now erased. His thoughts now
intermingled with millions of others in a sea of efficiency. No longer was he Darjessan, the scaly
green specimen he was before.
Now he was Borg, a single voice among many.
