For the last few weeks, I've noticed that diesel was much more expensive than the other fuels.
But now with Katrina in the mix, it's suddenly become the cheapest choice (2.36 compared to 3.09UL).

Indeed. The strategic oil reserves were released a few days ago.

Our company went up .30 today. For no reason. It was still the same gas we'd purchased a few days ago.
Exxon/Mobil was given tons of fuel from the reserves, yet continues to raise prices like there's no tomorrow. Saw several people photographing our signs today. Others, too.

here, gas has already jumped $1 in a day from $2.56 to $3.67 and it's suspected that it will go even higher. Thankfully I dont have to drive anytime soon.

The reason diesel has gotten more expensive is that technological advances have let refineries produce a higher percentage of gasoline from crude oil, resulting in less diesel. Before Mr. Diesel invented the engine that burns it, what we call "diesel" was tossed out as a by-product (as was gasoline, before the Otto cycle came around).

Ah. I read in the Harvard Business Review about taxes/tariffs going up on it. Suppose that was an effect instead of a cause,

They'd also have trouble for the planes then as well, although it's a different type of fuel it would be going up. Not sure if they would ground some. We had that at the one I was at a few years ago because of 9/11. It's understandable, but we didn't have any American planes that year as it was 3 days after I think.
