It's just so glamorized right now. If it were a non-exclusive (to some extent) item in our society, I think most people would take it more for granted. Part of the fun of drinking is being underage and getting it.. and I'm sure fewer people would drink as much as they do now if it were perfectly available. I know I wouldn't be trying to get booze as much if i could simply walk to the store and buy it.

No, according to your argument. |
No, it wouldn't, because they can't do all those things. But the fact is they CAN, and therefore 18 year olds should be allowed to drink.
And 5 is WAAAAAAY too young. Try 13 years. |
I don't get what general age has to do with things? The reason they've came to the decision they have now is due to mostly medical reasons. In Canada the drinking age is still 18, and they hardly have any problems as far as alcohol-related crime. Or crime of any for that matter (and the age for legalized sex is 14). I just think it should be 18 because if you want it at that age, you can get it anyway.

Yeah, 14 legalized sex is great .
But on a more serious note, the sex age is so low because most people can take it responsibly. People need to realize that no matter what the age is, it all comes down to responsibility. I think that if you needed a license to do it it would solve a few problems.

Actually, only in Alberta, Quebec, and Manitoba. In the rest of the country it's 19 (legal drinking age is one of those things under provincial jurisdiction, I believe).
But anyway, moot point.
Wikipedia wrote: | The high U.S. minimum drinking age is based on minimizing car accidents. The drinking age is actually not a federal law; every state has a limit of 21. The federal government simply withholds some highway transportation funding to states that don't have a limit of 21. The U.S. population have for decades been heavy users of personal automobiles for transportation, and hence it has a higher fatality rate for drivers taking around 43,000 lives a year. According to proponents such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the relatively high US drinking age lowers the risk of accidents and alcohol addiction in younger people. Some studies appear to support this claim, though others have implied that accidents and the learning curve for handling alcohol are simply moved to the 21+ demographic (perhaps not even saving any lives). Some people argue that if one is old enough to vote and be drafted, one is old enough to drink, and that being introduced to alcohol at a younger age in a family environment means people are more likely to learn responsible drinking habits. Many also consider it unreasonable for college students to not experiment with alcohol until they are 21, as long as it is done safely. |

A license to have sex? Or drink alcohol? Or both?
That seems a little too . . . government regulated for me. Licenses are usually involved when a certain degree of skill and responsibility is required--you have to demonstrate you are able to drive before they give you a driver's license, for example.

I meant the drinking, but the skill part is true... but perhaps you could prove it by having a clean criminal record, but it wouldn't have to be perfect, most people get at least a scratch on the record.
But proving your skill at sex? That seems a little too much.

I disagree. I am pretty young still, and I don't think that if it were lowered here in the States that I would be "partying". Honestly, watching people get smashed out of their minds and then smeared all over the pavement because they drove while drunk is not my kind of party.

Same here.... My biggest problem is the parties with drinking, drinking with 2-5 other people just to be drunk is alot better than being the cause of pedestrian roadkill.

Meh, i suppose i'm indifferent about the age. I'll be 21 in less than a year, so it doesn't really bother me anymore. What i don't like is that when all my friends and i go out to eat or something, and i'm the only one who cant get a drink because i'm the only one under 21. Not to drink to get drunk, but just as a thing to socialize with. Thankfully I have nice friends who share ! The drinking age hasn't stopped me though. I'm not a partier or anything, but all my friends being over 21, a few times a year we're get together at one of their houses for a sleepover and just have a good time. Nothing wild or crazy. Just a laid back night with my friends!

It really shouldnt be any younger than 18, if that low. to go any lower than that is just asking for trouble. When I was in school, some people cuased more than enough trouble with out being able to drink.

That's true. Everyone that does drink seems to get in trouble, so if they could drink it would probably double their trouble. I'm starting to think about changing my mind.

I started with vodka... must be different in Germany then. |
beer is easier to get, you can get it when you are 16, and in most shops they give it away to younger ones too (i know a 13 year old girl who was able to buy beer), and i think they are more careful with giving away vodka (when we were in austria on a class trip, we got so much vodka and tequila in one bar, because they knew that's what we wanted, and we had much money)

I don't see why the age limit is 21 in America. My brother is 18 and he can drink anywhere in the world... except America.
We have a big problem with binge drinkers in England. A lot of teenagers (including me) really like alcopops, such as WKD or Smirnoff Ice, because they're sweeter than beer and get you drunk quickly, without the nasty taste of rum, vodka or tequila.
My parents have been giving me sips of alcohol since I was about five, but it tasted foul so I didn't really see why adults drank it. Recently, I have been drinking a lot, but I'd actually rather drink Pepsi Max, there's just loads of alcohol in the house.

Yeah. On my 14th birthday, my sister gave me a shot of Jagermeister..... She figured I wouldn't like it, because it tastes like tar... but its actually pretty good, and now there's a bottle of it in the freezer... very tempting.

yes, austria (for those of you, who doesn't know it, it's that little country wich is south of germany), they would NEVER send us on a classtrip to australia, that would be too expencive (i know what i'mtalking about, we tried to talk our english teacher to go in class 12 to USA, or caribic, but she said we can't go, because not all of the students are as rich as we probably are)

Oooh! I love Gluvine (spelling?)! It's this drink you get in Christmas markets in Austria and Munich and it smells and tastes like CHRISTMAS!!!! The alcoholice version is great.
I had some cider last night and it kinda fused itself to my tongue... so gross that I tried to brush it off with my toothbrush and it didn't work so I had to scrape it off with my fingernails... yeah, my tongue started bleeding like mad. I woke up and it was still glued to the back of my throat.

I am now 21 and had a couple drinks over the weekend. Honestly, I dont see what the big deal is. I suppose, it has alot to do, with doing something "nuaghty", as such when your underage it is if you drink. Again, its no big deal. I feel 'meh' about it.

I don't think teens should be drinking so young. I am teen and I don't want to throw my life away on booze. I want to go to college and get a job. I don't have time to even think about drinking. It is not cool in my opinion.

.... Drinking a glass of vodka is like drinking a glass of water, except it burns on the way down and there's a lot less... Saying you have no time for drinking makes no sense. You have the time, but you choose not to do it. Make the distinction.

Take it easy, please.
Hmmm, in those ways you mentioned I suppose vodka is like water, however it also has an alocholic content that has the ability to impair your cognitive abilities.

Cool! My mum drank it when she went to Munich and Insbruk for the "weihnachtsmarkt" (christmas market) and she brought back these wonderful sweets that tasted of it.
Personally, I think it's pretty retarded that in most parts of the world you can drive before you can drink because regular traffic accidents (non booze related ones) kill more people than alcohol poisoning anyway.

I see no appeal whatsoever in getting my "fun" by ingesting alien chemicals that fool with brain chemistry, impair the senses, and make people do harmful and/or foolish things. I can think of any variety of activities I'd rather participate in that are, at least in some minute manner, good for either my body or mind, and just as much fun. Drinking with the intent to get drunk is disgusting to me, but people are free to do it, and I'm not going to stop them. I simply don't understand the mindset.
