WASHINGTON (March 19) - British and U.S. aircraft dropped nearly 2 million leaflets into Iraq on Wednesday, targeting 29 military and civilian sites in the southeastern part of the country, the U.S. military announced.
As the countdown to Thursday night continued in President Bush's 48-hour deadline for Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to leave the country or face war, the drops brought the total number of leaflets scattered to more than 17 million.
The 1,980,000 leaflets carried varying messages.
"Some stressed that Coalition forces do not wish to harm innocent Iraqis. One message informed Iraqi citizens they could be the victims if Saddam Hussein uses chemical weapons. Another message encouraged the Iraqi military to refrain from using weapons of mass destruction or burning oil fields," according to a U.S. military statement.
The coalition continued to provide radio broadcasts of news and information.
The purpose of the leaflets, officials in Washington said, was in large measure to persuade Iraqi forces in the south to stand aside when U.S.-led forces sweep north from Kuwait toward the oil fields around the southern city of Basra en route to the capital of Baghdad.
Instructions being given to Iraqi forces have been specific, including telling them to leave their tanks with their turrets reversed and to abandon vehicles in the open while returning to barracks.
Of the 280,000 U.S. and British troops arrayed in the Gulf against Iraq, 175,000 are in Kuwait awaiting orders from Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair to launch a massive air and ground invasion to remove Saddam and destroy alleged stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons.
Large numbers of these forces moved on Wednesday morning into the demilitarized zone that straddles the Iraq-Kuwait border. The zone extends 3 miles into Kuwait and 6 miles into Iraq.
U.S. defense officials and private analysts say one of the first objectives of an invasion would be to overwhelm regular army units and take Basra, about 40 miles (65 km) from the Kuwait border as tens of thousands of U.S. and British forces sweep northward.
Basra is 340 miles southeast of Baghdad.

"Well, my message is, is that if you harbor a terrorist, you're a terrorist. If you feed a terrorist, you're a terrorist. If you develop weapons of mass destruction that you want to terrorize the world, you'll be held accountable. ... If anybody harbors a terrorist, they're a terrorist. If they fund a terrorist, they're a terrorist. If they house terrorists, they're terrorists. I mean, I can't make it any more clearly to other nations around the world. If they develop weapons of mass destruction that will be used to terrorize nations, they will be held accountable." (George W. Bush, White House Rose Garden, November 26, 2001)

"We in America have learned bitter lessons from two world wars: It is better to be here [in Europe] ready to protect the peace, than to take blind shelter across the sea, rushing to respond only after freedom is lost. We've learned that isolationism never was and never will be an acceptable response to tyrannical governments with an expansionist intent." (Ronald Reagan, Speech, 40th Anniversary of D-Day, Pointe Du Hoc, France, June 6, 1984)

"...Mother of all battles..." From Saddam Hussein. He's also stated that he had given the order to use chemical weapons.
I have a conspiracy theory which I will not share.

Saddam's saying he's going to fire chemical warheads, and they've found several banned weapons already.
